📚 IGCSE CCEA Maths: Complex Numbers | IGCSE CCEA

Complex numbers are a vital extension of the real number system. In the CCEA specification they appear as an extension topic within the further mathematics pathway, introduced so that equations with no real solutions can still be solved. Understanding complex numbers opens the door to advanced topics in algebra, calculus and engineering, and it gives you a much clearer picture of why the real number line is not the end of the story. This revision guide covers all the key points you need to master for the CCEA examination.

1. Introduction to Complex Numbers |

nd (−3) × (−3) = 9, so squaring always produces a non-negative result. To handle this situation, mathematicians introduced the imaginary unit i, defined by the single property i² = −1. A complex number is then any number of the form a + bi, where a and b are real numbers.

i² = −1    z = a + bi    (a, b ∈ ℝ)

coefficient of i, not 3i). Complex numbers allow us to extend arithmetic and algebra seamlessly, because everything you already know about collecting like terms, expanding brackets and rearranging equations still works - you simply add one extra rule, i² = −1, to replace every occurrence of i² when it appears.

2. The Imaginary Unit i | 虚数单位 i

The imaginary unit i is defined by i² = −1, which also means i = √−1. It is not a "fake" number and it is not a mistake: it is a symbol defined by a property, just as negative numbers were once defined by the property that adding them takes you below zero. Because i² is negative, i itself is neither positive nor negative, and it cannot be placed anywhere on the real number line.

虚数单位 i 由 i² = −1 定义,这也意味着 i = √−1。

ike a decimal. Second, complex numbers cannot be ordered: it is meaningless to ask whether 2 + 3i is greater than 1 + 4i, because "greater than" . Third, higher powers of i simplify quickly, and that is the subject of the next section.

3. Powers of i and Cyclicity | i 的幂与周期性

= (−1) × (−1) = 1. The cycle then restarts, so i⁵ = i, i⁶ = −1, and so on. This cyclicity is one of the most frequently tested facts in the CCEA paper.

每次乘以 i 观察结果:i¹ = i,i² = −1,i³ = i² × i = −i,i⁴ = i² × i² = (−1) × (−1) = 1。之后循环重新开始,所以 i⁵ = i,i⁶ = −1,依此类推。

i¹ i definition | 定义
i² −1 core rule | 核心规则
i³ −i i² × i | i² 乘 i
i⁴ 1 (−1)² | (−1) 的平方

inder 3 gives −i. For example, 2025 = 4 × 506 + 1, so i²⁰²⁵ = i¹ = i. Never try to compute the power directly - always reduce to the remainder first.

例如 2025 = 4 × 506 + 1,所以 i²⁰²⁵ = i¹ = i。

4. Real and Imaginary Parts, and the Argand Diagram |

mplex numbers are equal only when both parts match: a + bi = c + di if and only if a = c and b = d. This "compare real with real, imaginary with imaginary" idea is the key to solving equations involving complex numbers.

对于 z = a + bi,我们记 Re(z) = a,Im(z) = b。所以对 z = 6 − 7i,Re(z) = 6,Im(z) = −7;负号属于虚部,因为 z = 6 + (−7)i。

ented as the point (a, b) on the Argand diagram, where the horizontal axis is the real axis and the vertical axis is the imaginary axis. The number 2 + 3i is the point (2, 3); the number −4 is the point (−4, 0) on the real axis; the number 2i is the point (0, 2) on the imaginary axis. Numbers of the form bi are called purely imaginary, and every real number is also a complex number with imaginary part zero.

5. Addition and Subtraction |

Adding and subtracting complex numbers is purely a matter of collecting like terms. Add the real parts together and add the imaginary parts together:

(3 + 2i) + (1 + 4i) = 4 + 6i

(5 + 6i) − (2 − 3i) = 3 + 9i

here are extremely common, so write the bracket out carefully before collecting. On the Argand diagram, addition corresponds to vector addition, so the four points 0, z₁, z₂ and z₁ + z₂ form a parallelogram.

6. Multiplication of Complex Numbers |

To multiply, expand the brackets exactly as you would with algebraic expressions, then replace i² with −1 and simplify. For example:

(2 + 3i)(1 − 4i) = 2 − 8i + 3i − 12i² = 2 − 5i + 12 = 14 − 5i

2abi. For instance, (1 + i)² = 1 + 2i + i² = 2i, and (2 + 3i)² = 4 + 12i + 9i² = −5 + 12i.

一个有用的特例是复数的平方:(a + bi)² = a² + 2abi + b²i² = (a² − b²) + 2abi。例如 (1 + i)² = 1 + 2i + i² = 2i,(2 + 3i)² = 4 + 12i + 9i² = −5 + 12i。

Multiplication also has a geometric meaning that becomes very powerful later: multiplying by i rotates a point through 90° anticlockwise about the origin. Check it on 1 + 0i: multiplying by i gives i, which is the point (0, 1), exactly a quarter turn from (1, 0).

7. The Complex Conjugate and Division |

The complex conjugate of z = a + bi is z̄ ginary part. Its most useful property is that the product is always real and non-negative:

复数 z = a + bi 的共轭是 z̄ = a − bi:实部相同,虚部取相反数。

z z̄ = (a + bi)(a − bi) = a² + b²

Division uses this property. To write a quotient in the form a + bi, multiply the numerator and the denominator by the conjugate of the denominator, so that the denominator becomes a real number:

(1 + 2i) ÷ (3 − i) = (1 + 2i)(3 + i) ÷ ((3 − i)(3 + i)) = (1 + 7i) ÷ 10 = 0.1 + 0.7i

into real and imaginary parts. Leaving i in the denominator at the end of a question will usually lose the accuracy mark.

先算分母:(3 − i)(3 + i) = 9 + 1 = 10。再展开分子:(1 + 2i)(3 + i) = 3 + i + 6i + 2i² = 3 + 7i − 2 = 1 + 7i。

8. Modulus and Argument |

from the origin on the Argand diagram, and the argument is the angle it makes with the positive real axis. Both are found from the right-angled triangle with horizontal side a and vertical side b.

|z| = √a² + b²     tan θ = b ÷ a

For z = 1 + i, |z| = √1 + 1 = √2 i, tan θ = −1, but the point is in the second quadrant, so θ = 135° = 3π/4 radians, not −45°. The modulus and argument together describe the position of a complex number completely, and they give rise to the polar form z = r(cos θ + i sin θ), often written r cis θ.

9. Solving Quadratic Equations with Complex Roots |

Complex numbers exist precisely so that every quadratic equation has a solution. If the discriminant b² − 4ac is negative, the equation has no real roots, but it always has a conjugate pair of complex roots. The method is unchanged: substitute into the quadratic formula, replace √−k with i√k, and simplify.

solve x² − 2x + 5 = 0. Here a = 1, b = −2, c = 5, so b² − 4ac = 4 − 20 = −16, and x = (2 ± √−16) ÷ 2 = (2 ± 4i) ÷ 2 = 1 ± 2i.

简单情形:x² + 1 = 0 得 x² = −1,所以 x = ±i;x² + 4 = 0 得 x² = −4,所以 x = ±2i。 此处 a = 1,b = −2,c = 5,判别式 b² − 4ac = 4 − 20 = −16,于是 x = (2 ± √−16) ÷ 2 = (2 ± 4i) ÷ 2 = 1 ± 2i。

The two roots 1 + 2i and 1 − 2i are conjugates, and this is not a coincidence: whenever a quadratic with real coefficients has non-real roots, they must occur as a conjugate pair. This fact is worth stating explicitly in an exam answer, and it is also a quick way to check your work.

10. Polar Form and De Moivre's Theorem |

cation and division far easier: moduli multiply or divide, while arguments add or subtract. It also leads to one of the most elegant results in the whole topic, De Moivre's theorem.

(cos θ + i sin θ)ⁿ = cos nθ + i sin nθ

For example, to find (1 + i)⁴, first write 1 + i in polar form: r = √2 and θ = π/4, so 1 + i = √2 (cos π/4 + i sin π/4). Then (1 + i)⁴ = (√2 ch between rectangular form a + bi and polar form r cis θ is the central skill of this section.

例如求 (1 + i)⁴:先把 1 + i 化为极坐标形式,r = √2,θ = π/4,所以 1 + i = √2 (cos π/4 + i sin π/4)。于是 (1 + i)⁴ = (√2)⁴ (cos π + i sin π) = 4(−1 + 0i) = −4。

11. Exam Technique and Common Errors |

Most marks lost in complex number questions come from a small number of repeated slips rather than from genuine misunderstanding.
