📚 Summer Bridging and Preparatory Course for Year 13 Cambridge Business | Year

Welcome to the Summer Bridging and Preparatory Course for Year 13 Cambridge International A Level Business (syllabus 9609). The step from AS to A2 is significant: you move from understanding functional areas such as marketing, operations, finance and human resources to integrating them into a holistic, strategic view of the whole organisation. This bridging course refreshes your AS knowledge, introduces the crucial A2 frameworks, and builds the analytical and evaluative skills needed to excel in Paper 3 (Case Study) and Paper 4 (Business Strategy). By the end, you will have a clear roadmap for the year ahead and the confidence to tackle complex business scenarios.

1. Why the AS-to-A2 Jump Is Bigger Than It Looks | AS到A2的跨越为何比想象中更大

AS rewards accurate knowledge and clear explanation; A2 rewards judgement. In the final year you are given a substantial case study with appendices of data, and you must analyse the business, apply appropriate models, weigh up competing options and arrive at a recommendation you can defend. The assessment objectives shift their weight toward analysis (AO3) and evaluation (AO4), so marks are earned by the quality of your reasoning, not by the number of definitions you can recall.

Look at how the demands change across the two years:

AS A2 / Year 13
Unit of analysis 分析单位 A single function 单一职能 The whole organisation and its environment
Time horizon 时间跨度 Short term 短期 Long term and strategic 长期与战略性

2. The Shift to Strategic Management |

The Year 13 syllabus is built around the concept of strategic management. While AS focuses on the day-to-day running of a business, A2 compels you to think like a CEO or a board of directors. You will analyse the organisation as a whole, make long-term decisions, and consider the impact of external and internal factors on its success. This holistic approach requires you to connect previously separate topics: how a change in marketing strategy affects finance, operations and human resources simultaneously.

To succeed, you must become comfortable with ambiguity and incomplete information, just like real business leaders. A2 questions often ask you to recommend and justify a strategic option, weighing up pros and cons from multiple perspectives. This is a departure from AS, where you mostly explained or discussed a single functional decision.

Strategy can be broken into three linked stages, and almost every A2 question sits inside one of them:

3. Strategic Analysis: SWOT, PESTLE and Five Forces | 战略分析:SWOT、PESTLE与五力模型

Strategic analysis starts with an honest audit of the internal position and the external environment. SWOT (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, threats) is the familiar summary tool, but at A2 it must be used analytically: a strength is only useful if it helps the business exploit a specific opportunity or defend against a specific threat. PESTLE extends the external scan to political, economic, social, technological, legal and environmental factors, and is especially valuable when a business operates internationally.

Porter's Five Forces (competitive rivalry, threat of new entrants, threat of substitutes, bargaining power of buyers, bargaining power of suppliers) explains why profit margins differ between industries. Examiners reward candidates who link the model to profitability and to a decision, not candidates who simply list the five forces.

4. Stakeholders, Objectives and Corporate Culture |

Strategy is never purely technical; it is negotiated between people with different interests. Shareholders may want dividends, employees want job security, customers want low prices and quality, suppliers want prompt payment, and the local community wants ethical behaviour. Mendelow's power-interest matrix helps you decide who must be consulted, who must be managed closely, and who only needs to be kept informed.

Objectives shift in the final year from functional targets to corporate aims: growth, market share, survival, profit maximisation versus satisficing, and increasingly sustainability. Corporate culture (Handy's power, role, task and person cultures) shapes whether a chosen strategy can actually be delivered, because culture determines how quickly information travels and how willing staff are to change.

5. Strategic Choice: Ansoff, Porter and Portfolio Tools |

The Ansoff matrix classifies growth options by how new the product and the market are, and each cell carries a different level of risk. Market penetration is the safest, diversification the riskiest. Porter's generic strategies explain how a firm can compete: cost leadership, differentiation, or focus on a narrow segment. Trying to do both cost leadership and differentiation without a clear focus is the classic route to being "stuck in the middle".

Portfolio tools such as the Boston matrix (stars, cash cows, question marks, dogs) help a multi-product firm decide where to invest and where to withdraw. Decision trees add numbers to the choice, comparing expected values so that a recommendation can be quantified rather than asserted.

6. Finance for Strategy: Investment Appraisal and Ratios |

Every strategic option has a price tag, and A2 expects you to judge whether the money is well spent. Investment appraisal compares projects using payback, average rate of return and net present value, while ratio analysis reveals whether the business can actually afford the strategy and whether it is performing as intended.

Payback (years) = Initial investment ÷ Annual net cash inflow

ARR = (Average annual profit ÷ Initial investment) × 100% 平均报酬率 =(年均利润 ÷ 初始投资)× 100%

NPV = Σ [Net cash flowₜ ÷ (1 + r)ᵗ] − Initial investment 净现值 = Σ[第t年净现金流 ÷ (1 + r)ᵗ] − 初始投资

ROCE = (Operating profit ÷ Capital employed) × 100% 资本回报率 =(营业利润 ÷ 运用资本)× 100%

Gearing = (Non-current liabilities ÷ Capital employed) × 100% 负债率 =(非流动负债 ÷ 运用资本)× 100%

Current ratio = Current assets ÷ Current liabilities

Remember the trade-offs: payback is simple and useful when cash is tight but ignores cash flow after the cut-off; NPV uses the time value of money and is technically superior, yet depends on an estimated discount rate. High gearing magnifies both profit and risk, and a rising current ratio can signal unsold inventory rather than strength. Evaluation means explaining which limitation matters most in this particular case.

7. Operations Strategy: Lean, Quality, Location and Networks |

Operations decisions become strategic when they commit large sums of money for years: a new factory, a shift to lean production with just-in-time stock, the adoption of total quality management, or a move to e-commerce distribution. Each choice affects unit cost, flexibility, lead times and customer satisfaction, and therefore the competitive position of the whole business.

Quantitative operations tools appear frequently in Paper 3 appendices, so practise them until they are automatic:

Break-even output = Fixed costs ÷ (Selling price − Variable cost per unit)

Labour productivity = Output ÷ Number of employees

Float = Latest finish − Earliest start

Network (critical path) analysis shows the shortest time in which a project can be completed and which activities cannot be delayed without delaying the whole project. Its weakness is that it assumes estimates are reliable and ignores the cost of crashing activities, which is exactly the type of limitation a strong evaluation paragraph should raise.

8. Marketing Strategy at A2 | A2营销战略

At A2, marketing is no longer just the four Ps; it is a set of decisions about markets, positioning and value. You will link the product life cycle to extension strategies, apply the Boston matrix to a product portfolio, compare penetration pricing with price skimming, and evaluate whether a distribution channel or a digital campaign fits the target segment and the brand image.
