The motto "unity of knowledge and action, great virtue and broad learning" is made up of two classical phrases. The first, unity of knowledge and action, holds that knowledge is only complete when it is tested in practice: a student who can recite a principle but cannot apply it has not really learned it. The second, great virtue and broad learning, places moral character before breadth of learning, then asks for that breadth as well.
