1. SQA Philosophy Qualifications at a Glance | SQA

Higher Philosophy is a one-year course that develops critical thinking skills through three mandatory units: Epistemology, Moral Philosophy, and Philosophical Enquiry. Assessment includes a written examination (worth 70%) and an assignment (worth 30%) that requires students to analyse a philosophical text or issue. The course introduces foundational concepts from Plato to contemporary thinkers, training you to construct and evaluate arguments rigorously.

Advanced Higher Philosophy builds on this with deeper study and a substantial dissertation (worth 50% of the final grade), alongside an examination paper. You will engage with complex philosophical debates, refine research skills, and produce an extended piece of independent work. This qualification is widely regarded by universities as excellent preparation for undergraduate study and is often viewed as equivalent to an A-level by English institutions.

2. How SQA Grades Map to UCAS Tariff Points | SQA 成绩如何对应 UCAS 分数

UCAS tariff points offer a common currency for comparing different qualifications. For SQA Philosophy students, it is important to know how Higher and Advanced Higher grades translate into points, especially when applying to universities that make offers using tariff values. The table below shows the 2024 tariff for SQA qualifications alongside A-level equivalences for context.

Note that while many selective universities do not rely solely on tariff points, understanding this conversion helps you gauge the relative value of your qualifications. For instance, an A at Advanced Higher carries the same tariff as an A at A-level, demonstrating how Scottish students can meet competitive offers.
