📚 Year 12 Cambridge Business: Common Mistakes and How to Correct Them | Year
Starting your Cambridge AS Level Business journey is exciting, but many students stumble on concepts that appear straightforward yet hold subtle complexities. This article highlights eleven common mistakes and provides clear corrections, plus a final section on revision and exam technique, to help you secure top marks.
Each mistake below is paired with the correction you should be writing in your answers, and each one is linked directly to the assessment objectives examiners reward. Read the correction, then go back to your own notes and rewrite the weak section in your own words.
1. Confusing Profit with Cash Flow |
Students frequently equate high profits with abundant cash, assuming that if the income statement shows a healthy surplus, the business bank account must be overflowing.
This mistake ignores the accruals concept: profit records sales when they occur on credit, while cash flow tracks actual receipts and payments. A profitable company can suffer a liquidity crisis if customers delay payment or if it invests heavily in non-current assets.
The correction is to describe both documents before you judge. The income statement explains performance; the cash flow forecast or statement explains survival. A business can be profitable and insolvent at the same time, and identifying that tension is a classic evaluation point.
| Feature | Profit | Cash flow |
| Timing | Recorded when the sale occurs (accruals) | Recorded when money actually moves |
| Credit sales | Increases profit immediately | No effect until the customer pays |
| Key risk | Low profitability, weak returns | Illiquidity, inability to pay debts |
2. Confusing Revenue with Profit |
Another common slip is treating revenue (turnover) as if it were profit. Revenue is the total income from sales before any costs are deducted, so a business with impressive revenue may still make a loss.
The correction is to keep the three layers separate: revenue, gross profit and net profit. Gross profit equals revenue minus cost of sales, and net profit equals gross profit minus expenses. A useful habit is to calculate a margin so the figures mean something.
Gross profit = Revenue − Cost of sales
Net profit margin = (Net profit ÷ Revenue) × 100%
In evaluation, link the margin to the industry. A 4% net margin may be normal in food retail but alarming in software, so always compare with the case study data rather than with an abstract ideal.
3. Mixing Up Fixed, Variable and Total Costs |
Students often label rent as a variable cost or raw materials as fixed, usually because they memorise definitions without testing them against a change in output.
The correction is a simple test: if output doubles, does this cost change? If it does not change, it is fixed; if it changes in direct proportion, it is variable. Costs that shift only in steps, such as hiring an extra supervisor, are semi-fixed or stepped costs.
Total cost = Fixed cost + (Variable cost per unit × Output)
Remember that average cost usually falls as output rises because fixed costs are spread over more units, but this is not the same as economies of scale, which are about the reasons the cost curve shifts down.
4. Misunderstanding Break-even Analysis |
A frequent error is believing that break-even output is the level of maximum profit, or that a break-even chart gives an exact answer. Break-even is simply the point where total contribution covers fixed costs.
The correction is to calculate contribution first, then break-even, then margin of safety, and finally to comment on what the result means for the decision in the case.
Contribution per unit = Selling price − Variable cost per unit
Break-even output = Fixed costs ÷ Contribution per unit
Margin of safety = Actual output − Break-even output
Also check the axes: output or sales volume goes on the horizontal axis, while revenue and costs go on the vertical axis. Charts are a planning tool that assumes costs and prices stay constant, which is exactly why they become a strong evaluation point.
5. Misapplying Price Elasticity of Demand |
Many answers claim that raising price always raises revenue, or that a price cut always wins customers. This ignores price elasticity of demand.
The correction is to state the formula, calculate the value, interpret it, and then link it to revenue. Demand is elastic when the value is greater than 1 in absolute terms: a price rise then reduces total revenue. Demand is inelastic when the value is less than 1: a price rise then increases total revenue.
PED = %Δ Quantity demanded ÷ %Δ Price
Note that the coefficient is normally negative, so always say "in absolute terms" when comparing with 1. Elasticity also changes over time and depends on brand loyalty, substitutes and the proportion of income the product takes, which gives you ready-made analysis.
6. Treating the Marketing Mix as a Tick-box List |
Students often describe price, product, promotion and place separately, as though each decision existed in isolation. Examiners call this description without analysis.
The correction is to show interdependence. A premium price only works with a high-quality product, selective distribution and promotion that signals exclusivity. A cost-leadership strategy needs low prices, efficient production and wide distribution, so the mix must be internally consistent.
Then link the mix to the target segment. A business targeting teenagers should not choose the same promotion channel as one targeting retired professionals. Consistency between the segment and the mix is where application and analysis marks live.
7. Confusing Market Share with Market Growth |
Market share is the proportion of total market sales captured by one business; market growth is the rate at which the whole market is expanding or contracting. They can move in opposite directions.
Market share = (Business sales ÷ Total market sales) × 100%
The correction is to state both figures and then interpret the combination. A firm can increase market share in a shrinking market, which may mean success against rivals but still mean falling absolute sales and idle capacity.
This pairing also strengthens evaluation: state what the data shows, explain why the two indicators differ, and judge which one matters more for the specific objective in the case.
8. Forgetting Opportunity Cost in Decision Making |
Many answers treat the cost of a decision as only the money spent. They ignore opportunity cost: the value of the next best alternative that is given up.
The correction is to name the alternative explicitly. If a small bakery uses its only oven for celebration cakes, the opportunity cost is the bread sales it cannot bake at the same time. If a firm spends £200,000 on a new machine, the opportunity cost includes the marketing campaign or extra staff it could have funded instead.
Be careful with resources that are genuinely idle. If a machine would otherwise stand unused, using it has a low opportunity cost, and this qualification is exactly the kind of judgement that lifts an answer into the top band.
9. Confusing Internal and External Economies of Scale |
Students often list purchasing economies and improved infrastructure together, without noticing that one comes from the firm's own growth and the other from the growth of the whole industry.
The correction is a simple sorting rule. Internal economies of scale arise inside the business: technical, purchasing, managerial, financial and marketing. External economies of scale arise outside it, such as a local pool of skilled labour, better transport links, or suppliers clustering in one region and lowering input prices for everyone.
Diseconomies of scale also belong to the internal category. They include poor communication, slower decision making, weaker motivation and coordination problems as a firm grows too large, and they explain why bigger is not automatically cheaper.
10. Mismatching Sources of Finance with Time Horizon |
A recurring error is recommending any source of finance that exists, rather than the source that matches the purpose and the time horizon.
The correction is to apply the matching principle. Short-term needs such as paying suppliers or covering a seasonal gap suit an overdraft, trade credit or factoring. Long-term needs such as buying premises or machinery suit a long-term loan, mortgage, share capital or retained earnings.
| Need | Suitable finance | Main drawback |
| Monthly wage gap | Bank overdraft | High interest, repayable on demand |
| New factory | Long-term loan or mortgage | Interest cost, security required |
| Rapid expansion | Share capital | Dilution of control, dividends |
Always weigh cost, risk, control and flexibility, then give a judgement. Recommending the cheapest option without checking the risk of dilution or the pressure on cash flow is a classic way to lose evaluation marks.
11. Writing Descriptive Answers without Application or Evaluation |
The most expensive mistake in the exam is writing everything you know about a topic without using the case study or reaching a judgement.
The correction is to follow the assessment objectives deliberately. AO1 is knowledge: correct terms and definitions. AO2 is application: facts, figures and names from the case. AO3 is analysis: chains of reasoning using "because" and "therefore". AO4 is evaluation: weighing both sides and making a supported judgement.
Practise turning a description into analysis. Instead of "the business will lose customers", write "if the business raises prices by 10% while demand is elastic, customers are likely to switch to cheaper rivals, so total revenue may fall even though the unit price is higher".
For evaluation, use a structure: it depends on, in the short run, in the long run, relative to the size of the business. Then commit to an answer. A balanced answer with no decision usually caps at the middle band.
12. Building a Correction Habit: Revision and Exam Technique |
Knowing the mistakes is not enough; you need a system that removes them. Keep an error log with three columns: the question, my mistake, the corrected version. Review it before every mock and rewrite the weakest paragraph in full.
In the exam, decode the command word before you plan. Calculate questions need working, not discussion. Explain questions need chains of reasoning. Analyse questions need causes and consequences. Evaluate or discuss questions need both sides plus a judgement.
Budget your time according to the marks available, show all workings, and use the case data at least once per paragraph. Underline the numbers in the case before you write, so application is guaranteed rather than accidental.
Finally, proofread for the unit errors that cost easy marks: revenue written as profit, millions written as billions, and a chart read from the wrong axis. Five minutes of checking is worth more than five extra sentences.
