1. Electric Charge, Current and Potential Difference |
t in the circuit every second. The equation linking charge, current and time is Q = I × t.
red for each coulomb of charge. The formula is V = E / Q, where E is energy in joules (J).
- Conventional current flows from positive to negative, but electrons actually flow in the opposite direction.
- The size of electric current can be measured with an ammeter connected in series; voltmeters are connected in parallel to measure p.d.
Q = I t
V = E / Q
2. Resistance and Ohm’s Law |
V across it produces a current of 1 A. The relationship is given by Ohm’s Law: V = I × R.
Ohm’s Law only holds true at constant temperature for ohmic conductors, such as a fixed metal wire at steady temperature. For such conductors, current is directly proportional to the potential difference, yielding a straight‑line I–V graph through the origin. As current increases, the wire can heat up, causing increased resistance due to more frequent collisions between electrons and vibrating metal ions. This is why filament lamps show a curve flattening at higher voltages.
V = I R
Key I–V characteristics for the exam:
- Resistor at constant temperature: straight line through origin.
- Filament lamp: line curves as temperature increases – resistance increases.
- Diode: very high resistance in reverse direction (only allows current to flow in one direction).
3. Series and Parallel Circuits |
In a series circuit, components are connected end to end. The current is the same everywhere. The total potential difference of the supply is shared between the components. The total resistance is the sum of individual resistances: Rtotal = R₁ + R₂ + …
In a parallel circuit, each component is connected on separate branches. The total current leaving the battery is the sum of the currents in each branch. The potential difference across each branch is the same as the source p.d. The total resistance is always less than the smallest individual resistance, and can be found using 1/Rtotal = 1/R₁ + 1/R₂ + … y for GCSE Higher tier students; for Foundation, qualitative understanding is sufficient).
| Property | Series | Parallel |
|---|---|---|
| Current | Same everywhere | Splits across branches |
| Potential difference | Shared between components | Same across each branch |
| Resistance | Rtotal = sum of all R | 1/Rtotal = sum of 1/R (Higher) |
4. Electrical Components and Energy Transfer |
(W), is the rate of energy transfer. Two useful power equations are P = V I and P = I² R.
两个常用的功率公式为 P = V I 和 P = I² R。
Domestic electricity uses alternating current (a.c.) with a frequency of 50 Hz and a supply voltage of 230 V in UK homes. The national grid distributes electricity at very high voltages to reduce energy losses due to heating of transmission lines. At high voltage, for a given power, the current is lower, so heating (I² R losses) is reduced.
E = V I t | P = V I | P = I² R
Appliances with high power ratings (such as heaters) draw large currents, so they need thicker cables and appropriate fuses. The energy transferred can also be calculated from electricity meter readings in kilowatt‑hours (kWh).
5. Introduction to Magnetism |
A permanent magnet produces its own magnetic field. The magnetic field is strongest at the poles (north and south). Magnets attract materials like iron, nickel and cobalt. When two magnets are brought together, like poles repel and unlike poles attract. The magnetic field lines show the direction a north pole would move, going from north to south outside the magnet.
Magnetic materials can be magnetised by stroking them with a permanent magnet or by placing them in a strong DC magnetic field. Soft magnetic materials (like iron) easily lose their magnetism, making them ideal for temporary magnets, while hard magnetic materials (like steel) retain magnetism and are used for permanent magnets.
6. Electromagnets and Magnetic Fields around Conductors |
When a current flows through a straight wire, a circular magnetic field is produced around it. The direction of the field can be found using the right‑hand grip rule: point your thumb in the direction of conventional current, and your curled fingers give the direction of the magnetic field.
A solenoid (coil of wire) produces a strong and uniform magnetic field inside it when a current passes through. Adding a soft iron core intensifies the field, creating an electromagnet. Electromagnets can be switched on and off and are used in relays, scrapyard cranes, electric bells and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).
Fleming’s left‑hand rule → (Motor effect)
7. The Motor Effect and Forces on Charges |
A current‑ aximum when the wire is perpendicular to the field, and zero when parallel. Fleming’s left‑ inger = Field (N → S), seCond finger = Current (conventional), and thuMb = Motion (force).
y (tesla, T), I is current (A), and L is the length of wire in the field (m). For a coil, the force turns the coil, forming the basis of a simple DC motor. The split‑ ommutator reverses the current every half turn to keep the coil spinning in one direction.
直导线的受力公式为 F = B I L,其中 B 是磁通量密度(特斯拉,T),I 是电流 (A),L 是导线在磁场中的长度 (m)。
F = B I L
8. Electromagnetic Induction and Transformers |
Electromagnetic induction is the creation of a potential difference (and current if the circuit is complete) across a conductor when it is moved relative to a magnetic field, or when the magnetic field through a coil changes. This is called induction – the opposite of the motor effect. A generator uses this principle to convert mechanical energy into electrical energy.
The size of the induced p.d. depends on the rate of change of the magnetic field. Faster movement, stronger magnets, or more turns on the coil produce a larger voltage. In an alternator (a.c. generator), slip rings and brushes allow the current to alternate, while a dynamo (d.c. generator) uses a split‑ring commutator to produce direct current.
Transformers consist of two coils wound on a soft iron core. An alternating current in the primary coil creates a changing magnetic field, which induces a voltage in the secondary coil. The ratio of the voltages equals the ratio of the number of turns: Vp / Vs = Np / Ns. Step‑up transformers increase voltage (more turns on secondary), while step‑down transformers reduce voltage. In an ideal transformer, power in = power out, so Vp Ip = Vs Is. Transformers are used extensively in the national grid to adjust voltage levels for efficient transmission and safe domestic use.
Vp / Vs = Np / Ns | Vp Ip = Vs Is (ideal)
