The institution began in 1848 as the College of Bytown, founded by Bishop Joseph-Bruno Guigues to serve the growing bilingual community of the Ottawa Valley. It was renamed the College of Ottawa in 1856, gained university status in 1866, and grew steadily into a full comprehensive university. A major restructuring in 1965 turned it into a publicly funded provincial institution, while Saint Paul University became its federated bilingual Catholic partner. Tabaret Hall, the domed building at the entrance to the downtown campus, remains the university's best-known symbol.
