📚 Year 13 WJEC Philosophy: International Competition Preparation Strategy | WJEC
Preparing for an international philosophy competition such as the International Philosophy Olympiad (IPO) can look daunting, but as a WJEC Year 13 student you already hold a strong foundation in critical thinking, ethical theory, philosophy of religion and philosophy of mind. Your A Level training has taught you to reconstruct arguments, evaluate them and write under pressure. This guide translates that classroom knowledge into a competitive performance, step by step, from understanding the format to a full sixteen-week preparation plan.
1. Understanding the International Philosophy Olympiad Format |
The IPO requires you to write a philosophical essay on one given quotation or question within four hours. You are free to choose from four topics spanning various branches of philosophy. There is no prescribed syllabus, no set text and no mark scheme in front of you: the examination is entirely open in content but strictly limited in time. The essay is judged on relevance to the topic, philosophical understanding, argumentation, originality and critical reflection.
One important rule distinguishes the IPO from any school examination: you must normally write in a language that is not your native language, chosen from the official languages of the competition. This is not a test of fluency for its own sake; it is designed to make every candidate think in a second language, which often produces fresher and more careful philosophical prose.
The essay must demonstrate a clear thesis, logical progression of arguments, consideration of counter-arguments and a conclusion. You are expected to engage with the quotation directly, showing philosophical analysis rather than mere summary. In practice this means the examiner should be able to underline one sentence in your introduction and say: this is what the whole essay will defend.
2. Mapping Your WJEC A Level Knowledge onto Competition Themes | 将 WJEC A Level 知识映射到竞赛主题
Your WJEC course covers a surprising amount of ground that IPO examiners reward. Ethical theory gives you normative frameworks, philosophy of religion gives you classical metaphysical argument, and philosophy of mind gives you contemporary analytic debate. The skill is not learning new content but recognising which of your existing tools fits the question in front of you.
| WJEC content | Typical IPO use |
| Ethical theory: Kantian deontology, utilitarianism, virtue ethics | Questions about duty, consequences, character, moral motivation |
| Metaethics: realism, emotivism, moral language | Questions about whether moral claims can be true or false |
| Philosophy of religion: design, cosmological, problem of evil | Questions about God, faith, reason and suffering |
| Philosophy of mind: dualism, materialism, personal identity | Questions about consciousness, machines, selfhood and freedom |
| Critical thinking and AO2 evaluation | The argumentation and critical reflection criteria |
Notice that your AO1 and AO2 skills map almost exactly onto the IPO criteria. AO1 is your ability to explain positions accurately; AO2 is your ability to evaluate them. Competitions reward AO2 far more heavily than a normal A Level essay, because no marker needs to check whether you know what Kant said, only whether you can think with Kant.
3. The Five Assessment Criteria and How to Score on Each | 五项评审标准与逐项得分策略
The rubric is usually expressed as a score of 1 to 10 on each of five dimensions. Understanding how each dimension is judged lets you design a single essay that collects marks in all five, rather than an essay that is brilliant on one axis and silent on the rest.
- Relevance to the topic: Every paragraph must answer the question. Test each paragraph with the phrase "this matters because".
- Philosophical understanding: Use concepts precisely, name positions accurately, and avoid vague appeals to "society" or "human nature". /
- Argumentation: Each claim needs a reason, and each reason needs a link to the next claim. /
- Originality: Offer at least one move that a well-read candidate would not automatically produce. /
- Critical reflection: Show awareness of the limits of your own argument. /
A useful rule of thumb is that relevance and understanding are "entry" marks which most prepared candidates obtain, while originality and critical reflection separate the finalists. If you have written a safe, correct essay with no risk, expect a solid score but rarely a top one.
4. Building a Winning Essay Architecture |
A competition essay is not a mystery story. Your reader should know from the first paragraph what you will argue and roughly how you will argue it. A reliable architecture for a four-hour essay looks like this:
rgument → Counter-argument → Rebuttal → Second argument → Critical reflection → Conclusion
The thesis should be a single sentence that takes a definite position, even if your final conclusion is qualified. "The quotation is partly right but mistakes the source of moral value" is a thesis; "there are many views on this topic" is not.
Allow one paragraph each for introduction and conclusion, then two to three substantive argumentative blocks in the body. Within each block, state the argument, support it, then immediately raise the strongest objection you can and answer it. This structure satisfies the criteria for argumentation, counter-argument and critical reflection simultaneously.
5. Working with the Quotation: Analysis Over Summary |
Many candidates lose marks because they treat the quotation as a prompt for free association. The quotation is the object of your analysis. Begin by identifying its key terms and asking whether they are ambiguous, then commit to one reading and state why that reading is the most philosophically interesting.
Consider the past topic "Is it more important to do the right thing or to do things right?" The phrase "the right thing" suggests a determinate moral object, while "to do things right" suggests procedural correctness. A strong essay asks whether these two can ever diverge, and what it would mean for a moral theory if they could not.
Is it more important to do the right thing or to do things right?" the right thing"暗示存在确定的道德对象,而"to do things right"暗示程序上的正确。
Similarly, "Do acts have a value in themselves or only in a context?" invites you to distinguish intrinsic from instrumental value, and to test the distinction against deontological and consequentialist accounts. Note that both of these examples are drawn from the ethics branch, which is usually the friendliest territory for WJEC students.
Do acts have a value in themselves or only in a context?"
6. Practising with Past IPO Topics | 用历年 IPO 真题练习
Practice with past IPO topics is the single highest-return activity available to you. Build a document of twenty to thirty past quotations, sorted by branch, and write a full essay for one of them every two weeks. Between full essays, write plans of no more than half a page for as many others as you can.
When you practise, always impose the real constraint. Set a timer, choose the topic within fifteen minutes, and stop writing when the time is up. A brilliant essay written over two days tells you nothing about your competition readiness.
Familiarise yourself with the assessment rubric and mark your own essays against the five criteria before seeking feedback from a teacher. Self-assessment forces you to internalise the standards, which matters because in the competition nobody will grade your essay between drafts.
7. Ethical Theory: Your Strongest Weapon |
Ethics is where WJEC students convert preparation into marks most quickly. Kantian deontology supplies the language of duty, universalisability and respect for persons; utilitarianism supplies the language of welfare, aggregation and consequences; virtue ethics supplies the language of character, flourishing and practical wisdom.
In a competition essay, do not simply summarise these theories. Put them to work. If the question concerns whether motives or outcomes matter, use Kant and Mill as the two poles of the debate and then introduce a virtue-ethical diagnosis: perhaps the question itself presupposes a false dichotomy between inner state and outer result.
Metaethics is an underused resource. A brief, well-placed discussion of whether moral judgements can be true at all, drawing on moral realism, expressivism or error theory, can lift an essay above the field, provided it is connected to the question rather than bolted on.
8. Philosophy of Religion and Philosophy of Mind in Competition Essays |
Philosophy of religion equips you for questions about God, faith, reason and suffering. The design argument, the cosmological argument, the problem of evil and the nature of religious language are not museum pieces; they are live examples of inference, explanation and the limits of evidence.
A common mistake is to treat the problem of evil as a devotional topic. Treat it instead as a problem in logic and axiology: can an omnipotent, omniscient and wholly good being coexist with the amount and distribution of suffering we observe? Then ask what a defence, rather than a theodicy, would need to show.
Philosophy of mind offers contemporary material that examiners enjoy: dualism and its interaction problem, identity theory and multiple realisability, functionalism and the possibility of artificial minds, and personal identity over time. If a topic mentions consciousness, machines or the self, this is your toolkit.
9. Critical Thinking, Counter-arguments and Originality |
Critical reflection is not the same as disagreement. It means showing that you understand why your own position is vulnerable, and what would have to be true for a rival position to succeed. A short, honest paragraph of this kind is worth more than three paragraphs of confident assertion.
Originality rarely means inventing a new theory. It usually means making a connection that a well-read candidate would not automatically make: linking a debate about free will to a debate about moral responsibility and punishment, or reading a question about truth in ethics through the lens of a question about truth in science.
Watch for fallacies that examiners notice instantly: begging the question in the opening sentence, the false dilemma, the appeal to consequences as if it settled truth, and the straw man of a caricatured opponent. Naming a fallacy is not enough; you must explain why the reasoning fails.
10. The Four-Hour Simulation and Time Management |
Four hours sounds generous until you are inside them. A proven distribution is fifteen minutes for choosing and planning, two and a half hours for drafting the body, forty-five minutes for the introduction and conclusion, and thirty minutes for revision. The introduction is written last precisely because you only know what you have argued once you have argued it.
| Time | Task |
| 0:00 - 0:15 | Read all four topics, choose one, sketch a thesis and three blocks |
| 0:15 - 2:45 | Draft the argumentative body |
| 2:45 - 3:30 | Write introduction and conclusion |
| 3:30 - 4:00 | Revise for clarity, relevance and terminology |
Revise with a checklist rather than by rereading aimlessly. Check that each paragraph has a topic sentence, that every technical term is used correctly, that the quotation is quoted at least twice, and that the conclusion answers the question rather than merely restating the thesis.
11. Writing Philosophy in a Second Language |
Since you may have to write in a non-native language, clarity matters more than elegance. Short sentences with explicit connectives - because, however, therefore, although - are easier to control and easier to mark. Long periodic sentences often collapse halfway through, taking your argument with them.
带有明确连接词的短句——because、however、therefore、although——更易掌控,也更易评分。
Build a personal glossary of philosophical vocabulary: validity, soundness, entailment, necessary and sufficient conditions, prima facie, reductio ad absurdum, supervenience, qualia, eudaimonia. Learn each one inside a sentence, not in isolation, so that it is available under time pressure.
建立一份个人哲学术语表:validity、soundness、entailment、necessary and sufficient conditions、prima facie、reductio ad absurdum、supervenience、qualia、eudaimonia。
Read your essay aloud, or translate it silently back into Chinese and then forward again. Both techniques expose sentences that sound impressive but carry no argument, which are the ones examiners penalise most heavily.
12. A Sixteen-Week Preparation Plan and Final Checklist |
A structured calendar removes the temptation to prepare only when you feel inspired. The plan below assumes two to three hours of dedicated work each week alongside your normal A Level revision, and it uses the branches you already study.
