The university opened in 1810 during the Prussian reform era, at a moment when the old European university was widely believed to be dying. Wilhelm von Humboldt, a linguist, diplomat and education reformer, was given the task of designing a new kind of institution. Instead of a training school for civil servants, he imagined a place where research and teaching would be inseparable, and where students would learn to think for themselves rather than simply absorb a fixed body of knowledge.

The founding circle around them included scholars such as the philosopher Johann Gottlieb Fichte and the theologian Friedrich Schleiermacher, who helped shape the first faculties.
