📚 Year 12 CIE Science: Mapping UK University Entry Requirements | Year 12 CIE
For Year 12 students studying Cambridge International (CIE) science subjects, the journey towards a UK university place requires careful alignment of A-Level choices with entry requirements. This article provides a comprehensive comparison of what leading UK universities expect for science-related degrees, helping you make strategic decisions about subject combinations and grades.
1. Overview of CIE Science Subjects at AS/A-Level | CIE AS/A-Level
CIE's A-Level science qualifications—Biology (9700), Chemistry (9701), Physics (9702) and Marine Science (9693)—are designed to build in-depth knowledge and practical competence. Each syllabus is assessed through a combination of multiple-choice, structured questions, and practical papers. The practical endorsement confirms hands-on skills, which many universities value as evidence of laboratory experience.
Although the AS-Level can be taken as a standalone qualification, most UK universities base their offers on three full A-Levels. Some, however, still consider AS results in borderline decisions or to support predicted grades.
2. Typical University Entry Requirements for Science Degrees |
Across the UK, standard offers for science degrees range from ABB to A*AA, depending on the institution and course competitiveness. Most require at least two science subjects, with Mathematics often considered a science. A typical offer from a Russell Group university might be AAA, including specific subjects.
For highly competitive courses like Medicine, Veterinary Science, and Natural Sciences at Oxbridge, offers frequently demand A*AA or A*A*A, with the asterisk tied to a particular subject.
3. Subject Combinations for Medicine and Dentistry |
Medicine and dentistry are among the most prescriptive degree courses in terms of subject requirements. Chemistry is the cornerstone: nearly every medical school lists it as essential, often at grade A or A*. Biology is the next most common requirement, though some universities will accept one of Biology, Physics, or Mathematics alongside Chemistry.
Here is a snapshot of medicine requirements at selected UK universities:
| University | Typical Offer | Required Subjects |
|---|---|---|
| Oxford | A*AA | Chemistry and one of Biology, Physics, Maths |
| Cambridge | A*A*A | Chemistry and one of Biology, Physics, Maths; three sciences/maths recommended |
| Imperial | AAA | Chemistry and Biology |
| UCL | A*AA | Chemistry and Biology |
| King's College London | A*AA | Chemistry and Biology |
4. Engineering and Physical Sciences: Required and Preferred Subjects |
All engineering disciplines require A-Level Mathematics, and most specify Physics as well. Some courses, like Chemical Engineering, may accept Chemistry in place of Physics, but Mathematics remains non-negotiable. Further Mathematics is strongly recommended, especially for top-tier universities.
The table below highlights entry requirements for engineering at selected institutions:
| University | Typical Offer | Required Subjects |
|---|---|---|
| Cambridge | A*A*A | Maths and Physics, with A* in both |
| Oxford (Engineering Science) | A*A*A | Maths and Physics, A* in both |
| Imperial (Mechanical Engineering) | A*A*A or A*AAA | Maths A*, Physics A |
| UCL (Electronic Engineering) | AAB | Maths and one of Physics, Chemistry, etc. |
5. Biological and Life Sciences: Flexibility and Essentials |
For biology-related degrees such as Biochemistry, Biological Sciences, and Biomedical Science, the majority of courses require A-Level Biology and Chemistry, or at least one of them with another science subject. Some courses are more flexible,
