1. Plato's Theory of Forms and the Cave Analogy |
Plato argues that the empirical world is a realm of shadows, constantly changing and only accessible through the senses. True reality, however, consists of the Forms – eternal, unchanging, perfect archetypes of concepts such as Justice, Beauty, and Goodness. The Form of the Good illuminates all other Forms, just as the sun makes sight possible in the Analogy of the Cave. The prisoner escaping the cave represents the philosopher's ascent from opinion (doxa) to knowledge (episteme).
A very common error is to describe the Forms as merely 'ideas in our minds' – this is precisely what Plato rejects. Forms have independent, objective existence in a non-physical realm. Candidates also lose marks by failing to distinguish the Form of the Good from other Forms. The Good has a unique ontological and epistemological role: it is the source of reality and intelligibility. When you write about the Cave, always connect the stages of the prisoner's journey to the epistemological and metaphysical shifts in the divided line; otherwise the essay remains descriptive rather than analytical.
Another trap is to oversimplify Aristotle's criticism of Plato. The Third Man argument is not a knock-down objection; it challenges the infinite regress generated if the Form of Man must resemble both the particular man and a further Form. Show that you understand why Aristotle's emphasis on immanent forms rather than transcendent Forms gains traction here.
2. Aristotle's Four Causes and the Prime Mover |
Aristotle explains why an object exists and is the way it is through four causes: material, formal, efficient, and final. Crucially, the final cause (telos) is not imposed by a designing mind from outside; it is built into the nature of the thing. A knife's telos – to cut – guides the efficient cause (the craftsman) who shapes the material (metal) according to the formal cause (the design). This teleological framework applies across physics and metaphysics, culminating in the Prime Mover.
Misreading the Prime Mover as a creator God who pushes matter into existence is one of the most frequent errors in this unit. The Prime Mover does not create; it is pure actuality, entirely lacking potentiality, and moves by attraction – as a beloved moves the lover. It thinks only of itself, because thinking about anything else would introduce potentiality. Students who treat the Prime Mover as a personal, intervening deity lose all connection to Aristotle's own texts and earn low AO1 marks. Always specify that the Prime Mover is the final cause, not the efficient cause, of the universe.
Moreover, confusion often arises when candidates attempt to compare Aristotle with Plato. Plato's Form of the Good is the source of being and truth; Aristotle's Prime Mover is the ultimate object of desire, sustaining eternal motion. They are not interchangeable. An exam question asking you to compare these concepts requires precise mapping, not vague claims that both are 'transcendent' – Aristotle's Prime Mover is not in a separate world of Forms, but rather exists in the same universe as the outermost sphere of fixed stars.
3. Substance Dualism: Descartes' Conceivability Argument |
Descartes argues for a real distinction between mind and body. In the Sixth Meditation, he states: the fact that I can clearly and distinctly conceive of mind without body, and body without mind, entails that God can make them separate – and thus they are distinct substances. The mind's essence is thinking; the body's essence is extension. This substance dualism faces immediate challenges: how can an unextended thinking substance interact with an extended physical substance? The interaction problem, famously posed by Princess Elisabeth, remains a significant weakness.
A typical student mistake is to treat Descartes' argument as a simple 'I can imagine it, therefore it is possible' claim. The conceivability argument relies on the epistemological guarantee of clear and distinct perception: whatever I perceive clearly and distinctly as separable is genuinely separable. Students must explicitly state the link between clear and distinct ideas and God's non-deceptive nature, otherwise the argument collapses into psychologism. Furthermore, do not confuse Descartes' method of doubt with his positive arguments for dualism. The cogito establishes 'I exist' as a thinking thing, but the real distinction is a further step that requires the premise of divine veracity.
Also be careful to distinguish between substance dualism and property dualism. Descartes is arguing that the mind is a separate substance, not merely that mental properties are non-physical. Exam answers that drift into 'mind and brain are different aspects of the same thing' are describing dual-aspect theory or property dualism, which misrepresent Descartes. If a question explicitly targets substance dualism, keep the distinction sharp.
4. The Teleological Argument: Aquinas vs. Paley |
The OCR specification distinguishes carefully between Aquinas' Fifth Way and Paley's design argument. Aquinas argues from the regularity of goal-directed behaviour in non-intelligent beings: an arrow reaches its target only because it is directed by an archer. Similarly, natural bodies act for an end, which implies an intelligent being by whom all things are directed – God. Paley, in contrast, uses an analogical argument: the watch's complexity implies a watchmaker, so the far greater complexity of the universe implies a divine designer.
The most damaging exam error is conflating the two. Candidates who write 'Aquinas uses the watch analogy' forfeit immediate marks. Aquinas never uses a watch; his Fifth Way depends on Aristotelian teleology – things act for an end without intelligence – and requires an external intelligence to direct them. Paley's argument, however, relies on the analogy between natural organisms and human artefacts. If a question asks you to analyse the teleological argument, you must be able to explain both versions and evaluate each separately. Hume's criticisms, for instance, apply far more effectively to Paley than to Aquinas: Hume's discussion of the incompetent creator, multiple deities, or the self-ordering tendency of matter directly targets Paley's analogy, whereas Aquinas' Fifth Way withstands some of these due to its non-analogical structure.
Don't neglect Darwin's challenge. Natural selection provides a mechanism for apparent design without a designer. The random mutation and natural selection model explains the fit of organisms to their environments through purely naturalistic processes. However, show nuance: Darwin's theory does not refute the argument outright – some theists, like Swinburne, argue that the laws that make evolution possible themselves require explanation.
5. The Cosmological Argument: Causation and Contingency |
Aquinas presents three cosmological arguments – often reduced to the First, Second, and Third Ways. The First Way argues from motion: objects move from potentiality to actuality only by something already actual; an infinite regress of movers is impossible, so there must be a first unmoved mover. The Second Way argues from efficient cause: nothing causes itself; if we remove a causal cause we remove its effect; therefore a first efficient cause exists. The Third Way argues from contingency: things come into being and pass away; if everything were contingent, once nothing existed and nothing could begin to exist; so there must be a necessary being.
Students regularly mishandle the second premise of the Third Way: the claim that if everything is contingent, at some time nothing existed. This is a modal fallacy unless you follow Aquinas's specific reasoning about infinite time. Many students simply state that 'if everything is contingent then there must have been nothing', without referencing the infinity of past time or the impossibility of a contingent being having always existed. The correct move is to say: given infinite past time, if each thing at some time does not exist, then there is a time when nothing exists – because an infinite series of contingent beings cannot self-sustain without a necessary being. Candidates who fail to unpack this premisewill find their analysis marked down for lack of depth.
Also, be ready to contrast Aquinas with Leibniz and the Principle of Sufficient Reason. Leibniz's argument does not rely on motion or causation but on the demand for a complete explanation of why there is something rather than nothing. A typical mistake is to blur the two and treat the Principle of Sufficient Reason as though it were identical to Aquinas's Second Way. Keep them distinct when a question asks about the cosmological argument from contingency, which may refer to either Aquinas (Third Way) or Leibniz.
6. The Ontological Argument: Anselm vs. Descartes and Kant's Objection |
Anselm defines God as "that than which nothing greater can be conceived." Even the Fool who says "God does not exist" must have this concept in his understanding. If God exists only in the understanding and not in reality, we could conceive a greater being – one that exists in reality. So, to avoid contradiction, God must exist in reality. Gaunilo retorts with the Lost Island parody: one cannot define a perfect island into existence. Descartes later offered a version based on the essence of God as a supremely perfect being; existence is a perfection, so God necessarily exists, just as a triangle necessarily has three angles.
A recurring mistake is to treat Anselm's argument as if it were Descartes'. Anselm does not argue from 'existence is a perfection' in Proslogion 2. Rather, his argument is comparative: a being that exists in reality is greater than one that exists only in the mind. Descartes reformulates this into a predicate argument. Many candidates then bring in Kant's famous objection – "existence is not a predicate" – and apply it unthinkingly to both. While Kant's critique is devastating against Descartes' claim that existence adds something to a concept, its relevance to Anselm is more controversial. When evaluating Anselm, you might argue that Kant's point doesn't fully defeat the notion that it is greater to exist in reality than in the mind.
Furthermore, students often misunderstand Gaunilo's parody. Gaunilo does not claim Anselm's logic is formally invalid; he claims that if the logic were valid for God, it would be valid for any perfect thing, leading to absurdities. However, Anselm's reply hinges on the unique necessary existence that belongs only to God. Be sure to show that you grasp why islands, unlike God, can always be thought not to exist.
7. The Problem of Evil: Logical and Evidential Challenges |
The logical problem of evil, formulated by Mackie, claims that the existence of an omnipotent, omnibenevolent God is logically incompatible with the existence of evil. If God is omnipotent he could prevent evil; if omnibenevolent he would want to; but evil exists, so such a God does not exist. A successful defence only needs to show that the existence of God and evil is not logically contradictory. Plantinga's free will defence achieves this: it is possible that a morally significant free will is a great good, and God could not create free beings who never choose evil without eliminating that freedom.
A critical error is to confuse a theodicy with a defence. A defence, like Plantinga's, only aims to show that the existence of God and evil is possible; it does not claim to explain why God actually allows specific evils. A theodicy, such as Irenaeus' soul-making theodicy, goes further and asserts that evil is necessary for genuine moral and spiritual development. If a question explicitly asks for a theodicy, you must not submit a pure defence. Equally, if you are asked to evaluate the success of responses to the logical problem, restricting yourself to theodicies fails to appreciate the precise function of Plantinga's free will defence, which many philosophers regard as resolving the logical problem entirely.
When handling the evidential problem – the sheer amount, distribution, and seemingly pointless nature of evil – students often overlook the power of the argument from natural evil. The evidential problem argues that even if God's existence is logically compatible with some evil, the quantity and gratuitousness of suffering make God's existence improbable. William Rowe's fawn dying in a forest fire provides a powerful example of apparently pointless suffering. In your essays, you must address both moral and natural evil, and explain why the free will defence alone does not obviously cover natural disasters. A good response will bring in the work of Swinburne or Hick to engage with these evidential nuances.
8. Religious Experience: James, Freud and the Principle of Credulity |
William James identifies four marks of mystical experience: ineffability, noetic quality, transiency, and passivity. These experiences, he argues, provide a valid source of knowledge, though they are not universal. Swinburne reinforces this with the Principle of Credulity: if it seems to a subject that X is present, then probably X is present, unless there are special defeaters. Thus, religious experiences should be accepted as prima facie evidence of God unless there is a positive reason to doubt them.
Exam credit is often lost when candidates treat Freud's challenge merely as 'religion is an illusion'. This oversimplification misses the precise mechanism Freud proposes: God is a projection of an infantile need for a father-figure who provides protection in a hostile world. This wish-fulfilment theory does not prove God does not exist, but it does provide a psychological explanation that undermines the justification of religious experience. To achieve high AO2 marks, you must explain why Freud's account may or may not constitute a special defeater. Some argue that the genetic explanation – showing the origin of a belief – does not logically falsify the belief; others contend that once a purely naturalistic explanation of the experience is available, the Principle of Credulity is neutralised.
Also pay close attention to the difference between corporate and personal religious experiences. OCR often asks you to refer to an example, such as the Toronto Blessing or Teresa of Avila. Be ready to use these case studies to illustrate James's marks or Swinburne's arguments. A purely abstract discussion of religious experience without a concrete example will result in an underdeveloped argument.
9. Common Exam Pitfalls: Analysis vs. Description and Scholar Deployment |
The single most pervasive error in Year 12 OCR Philosophy essays is privileging description over analysis. Listing Plato's Forms without weighing their strengths and weaknesses earns minimal marks for AO2. Each paragraph should pivot: state a scholar's view, explain it, then immediately assess it. Use evaluative language such as 'This is convincing because...' or 'However, a significant weakness is...' Examiners look for sustained critical engagement, not a summary of the textbook.
Another frequent shortcoming is the vague reference to 'scholars'. Many candidates write 'some scholars say...' without naming them. In OCR, you must name key thinkers – Plato, Aristotle, Descartes, Hume, Kant, Plantinga, Swinburne, etc. – and accurately represent their arguments. A named, properly interpreted scholar is worth far more than three anonymous ones. Moreover, avoid artificial balance: do not simply say 'some agree, some disagree'. Instead, show precisely why a criticism lands or misses, and link it back to the argument's premises.
Students also regularly misinterpret essay questions. If a question asks 'To what extent is the teleological argument convincing?', you are expected to construct a thesis that argues for a specific position, not to list pros and cons without a clear conclusion. A strong introduction will set out the evaluative stance and map the criteria of 'convincing' – perhaps logical validity, compatibility with science, or explanatory power. Your conclusion must flow from the analysis in the body, directly addressing the 'to what extent' component.
