Utrecht University traces its origins to the Illustre School established in the city in 1634, which was raised to full university status in 1636, making it the oldest university in the Netherlands. In its early centuries it was a centre for theology, law, medicine and the natural sciences. Anna Maria van Schurman was allowed to attend lectures from 1636 and is often described as the first female university student in the country, while Rene Descartes lived and worked in Utrecht in the 1630s and 1640s, a period that produced a famous dispute with the university's first rector.

It is also regularly ranked among the leading universities in the Netherlands, alongside institutions such as Delft, Amsterdam, Leiden and Wageningen, although the strongest Dutch department for a given subject is not always at the same university.
