1. Population, Sample and Census |
The population is the complete set of individuals or items you want to investigate. Think of it as the 'whole world' of your study. A sample is a smaller, manageable subset selected from that population.
A census measures every single member of a population. It gives true values but is often impractical. A sample survey collects data from only part of the population and aims to estimate population characteristics.
A sampling unit is a single individual or item being sampled, while the sampling frame is the list of all sampling units. If the frame is biased – for example, missing some groups – the sample will be unrepresentative.
To remember the difference between census and sample: 'A census is a complete count, a sample is a sneak peek.'
2. Types of Data and Variables |
Quantitative data consists of numbers representing counts or measurements. It splits further into discrete (countable, like number of students) and continuous (measurable, like height).
Qualitative data describes categories or attributes that cannot be measured with a natural numerical scale, such as colour, eye colour or types of cuisine.
Think: 'Discrete data you can count on your fingers; continuous data you can measure with a tape or scale. Qualitative data answers "what kind?" not "how many?".'
A variable is discrete if it takes only isolated values, often integers. A variable is continuous if it can take any value within an interval.
3. Measures of Central Tendency |
The mean (x̄ or μ) is the arithmetic average: sum all values and divide by the count. It uses every data point but is sensitive to extreme values.
The median is the middle value when data are ordered. It is robust against outliers and often preferred for skewed distributions. If n is even, take the mean of the two middle numbers.
The mode is the value that occurs most frequently. A data set can have one mode (unimodal), two modes (bimodal) or no mode at all.
Memory hook: 'Mean uses every piece, median splits the middle, mode votes for the most popular.'
4. Measures of Dispersion |
The range is the simplest spread measure: largest value minus smallest. It is easily affected by one outlier.
The interquartile range (IQR) = Q₃ − Q₁. It covers the middle 50% of data and is resistant to outliers. Useful for comparing spreads alongside medians.
Variance quantifies average squared deviation from the mean. For a population: σ² = Σ(x − μ)² / N; for a sample, s² = Σ(x − x̄)² / (n − 1).
Standard deviation is the square root of variance, σ or s. It has the same units as the data and is the most commonly reported measure of spread.
Quick formula link:
σ² = Σ(x − μ)² / N, s² = Σ(x − x̄)² / (n − 1)
5. Presenting Data: Frequency Density and Cumulative Frequency |
When drawing a histogram with unequal class widths, we use frequency density = frequency ÷ class width. The area of each bar represents frequency.
A cumulative frequency graph (or ogive) plots the running total of frequencies against the upper class boundaries. The median, quartiles and percentiles can be read directly from the curve.
To find the median from a cumulative frequency graph, go to 50% of the total frequency on the vertical axis, draw across to the curve and drop down to the data axis.
Memory phrase: 'Frequency density means area, cumulative frequency means total so far.'
6. Box-and-Whisker Plots and Outliers |
A box-and-whisker plot displays the five-number summary: minimum, Q₁, median, Q₃, maximum. The box spans Q₁ to Q₃, with a line at the median.
Outliers at a value is an outlier if it is less than Q₁ − 1.5 × IQR or greater than Q₃ + 1.5 × IQR.
Outliers are marked as stars or points beyond the whiskers. Always check for outliers as they can distort calculations of the mean and range.
Mnemo: '1.5 IQR is the fence; anything beyond is a suspected outlier.'
7. Probability Fundamentals |
Sample space is the set of all possible outcomes of an experiment. An event e. Probability of an event A is P(A) = number of outcomes in A ÷ total number of outcomes.
事件 A 的概率为 P(A) = A 中的结果个数 ÷ 总结果个数。
Two events are mutually exclusive if they cannot happen at the same time. In this case P(A ∩ B) = 0 and P(A ∪ B) = P(A) + P(B).
此时 P(A ∩ B) = 0,且 P(A ∪ B) = P(A) + P(B)。
Events are independent currence of one does not affect the probability of the other. For independent A and B, P(A ∩ B) = P(A) × P(B).
P(A ∩ B) = P(A) × P(B)。
Conditional probability P(A | B) is the probability of A given that B has occurred. It is calculated as P(A | B) = P(A ∩ B) ÷ P(B). Use this with tree diagrams for multi-stage problems.
P(A | B) = P(A ∩ B) ÷ P(B)。
Quick check: 'Mutually exclusive means cannot share; independent means cannot influence.'
8. Discrete Random Variables |
A discrete random variable X takes a countable number of possible values, each with a probability. The sum of all probabilities in its distribution must equal 1.
The expected value · P(X = x)]. It represents the long-run average if the experiment is repeated many times.
The variance Var(X) = E[(X − μ)²] = Σ (x − μ)² P(X = x). A faster formula is Var(X) = E(X²) − [E(X)]².
X 的方差为 Var(X) = E[(X − μ)²] = Σ (x − μ)² P(X = x)。一个更快的计算公式是 Var(X) = E(X²) − [E(X)]²。
Expectation is a weighted average: each x is weighted by its probability. Think: 'Expected value is the probability-weighted centre of mass.'
9. Binomial Distribution |
A binomial distribution models the number of successes in a fixed number of independent trials, each with the same probability of success p. We write X ~ B(n, p).
记为 X ~ B(n, p)。
Conditions: fixed number of trials n; two possible outcomes (success/failure); trials independent; constant p. If any condition fails, it is not binomial.
Probability of exactly r successes: P(X = r) = C(n, r) pʳ qⁿ⁻ʳ, where q = 1 − p.
The mean is E(X) = np and variance is Var(X) = npq. These are useful shortcuts – you do not need to sum over all r.
To decide if a situation is binomial, ask: 'Fixed n, independent trials, same p, success/failure only.'
10. Normal Distribution |
The normal distribution is a continuous probability distribution with a bell-shaped curve, symmetric about the mean μ. The spread is determined by the standard deviation σ.
Roughly 68% of data lie within 1σ of μ, 95% within 2σ, 99.7% within 3σ. This empirical rule helps with visual estimation.
To find probabilities, we convert any normal variable X to the standard normal Z ~ N(0, 1) using Z = (X − μ) / σ. Then use normal distribution tables.
The z-value tells you how many standard deviations X is above or below the mean. A negative z means below the mean.
When using the table, remember the table usually gives P(Z < z). For 'greater than' probabilities, use 1 − table value.
Key formula:
Z = (X − μ) ÷ σ
11. Quick Mnemonic Tips & Recap |
For central tendency: 'Mean is fussy (affected by outliers), Median is tough, Mode is popular.'
Spread measures: 'Range gives the full stretch, IQR gives the sturdy middle, Standard deviation gives the typical wobble.'
Probability junction: 'Mutually exclusive? Can't happen together. Independent? One doesn't care about the other.'
Binomial vs normal: 'Binomial counts successes in n tries; normal measures how far from average on a smooth curve.'
