1. Melody and Interval Analysis |
Melody questions usually ask you to describe the shape, range and contour of a line, or to identify specific intervals either from an unseen score or aurally. A high-frequency task is to name the interval between two given notes. Students frequently confuse interval quality, mistaking a perfect 5th for a perfect 4th, or a minor 6th for a major 6th. The difference between compound and simple intervals also trips up many candidates.
Inversion rules must be automatic. When seconds and sevenths are inverted, candidates often forget that a major 7th inverts to a minor 2nd, not to another major interval. Remember that the interval number and its inversion always add up to nine, and that major becomes minor, while perfect stays perfect.
Perfect 5th ↑ → Perfect 4th | Major 7th → Minor 2nd | Minor 6th → Major 3rd | Augmented 4th → Diminished 5th
Interval recognition in melodic dictation is equally crucial. Many candidates lose marks by writing a tone instead of a semitone at the opening of a phrase, especially when the melody begins on the leading note or the third degree. Always relate the first two notes to the tonic triad before committing them to paper.
2. Melodic and Rhythmic Dictation |
Dictation is the section where technique matters as much as ear training. In rhythmic dictation the biggest errors are note values and grouping: confusing 6/8 with 3/4, forgetting to dot a note that crosses a beat, omitting ties, and misplacing rests. Establishing the metre before writing a single note solves most of these problems.
6/8 = 2 dotted-crotchet beats per bar, each dividing into 3 quavers | 3/4 = 3 crotchet beats per bar, each dividing into 2 quavers
For melodic dictation, a reliable method is to listen three times with different purposes: the first hearing establishes key, metre and tempo; the second fixes the rhythm and the openings and endings of phrases; the third fills in pitch detail and checks accidentals. Candidates who try to write everything on the first hearing inevitably lose the thread.
Common mistakes also include ignoring the given starting note, failing to note whether the melody is in a major or minor key, and writing a plausible but wrong ending. Always check that your final note agrees with the key signature you have written.
3. Harmony and Cadence Identification |
Harmonic analysis questions require you to label chords with Roman numerals, to identify inversions, and to name cadences. The most frequent error is naming every V - I progression a perfect cadence without checking the soprano. Only when the final chord has the tonic in the top voice is the cadence perfect; otherwise it is an imperfect cadence at a close.
| Cadence | Progression | Typical error |
| Perfect | V → I (tonic in soprano) | Labelled without checking the melody |
| Imperfect | I → V (or any chord → V) | Confused with an interrupted cadence |
| Plagal | IV → I | Missed when the bass moves stepwise |
| Interrupted | V → vi | Called a perfect cadence that "goes wrong" |
Another high-frequency trap is the cadential 6/4. Candidates label the first chord of the cadence as a root-position tonic and then cannot explain the movement of the bass. Write it as Ic - V - I and the progression makes sense. Inversion figures such as Ib, Ic, V7d and V7b must be learnt as vocabulary.
Finally, remember that in minor keys the leading note is raised by an accidental. Candidates who label the chord on the seventh degree as a minor chord in a minor key lose easy marks, because the raised leading note creates a major dominant triad, or a diminished seventh chord on the leading note.
4. Tonality, Modulation and Key Relationships |
Questions on tonality ask you to name the opening key, identify any modulation, and describe the relationship between the new key and the home key. The standard relationships to know by heart are the dominant, the subdominant, the relative minor or major, the tonic minor, and the mediant in Romantic repertoire.
The most common mistake is labelling a tonicisation as a modulation. A brief tonicisation lasts a few chords and is confirmed neither by a cadence nor by a change in the key signature, whereas a true modulation is confirmed by a cadence in the new key. Candidates also lose marks by naming the key imprecisely - writing "F minor" when the music is clearly in F sharp minor, or omitting the word "minor" altogether.
Modal and twentieth-century tonalities appear regularly too. Be ready to identify Dorian, Mixolydian and Aeolian modes, the pentatonic scale and the blues scale, and to explain how a modal passage differs from a tonal one - usually through the absence of a raised leading note and the presence of a flattened seventh.
Related keys: V (dominant) | IV (subdominant) | vi (relative minor) | iii (mediant) | i (tonic minor)
5. Period and Style Identification |
Style questions reward candidates who quote musical evidence rather than dates. You should be able to justify a Baroque, Classical, Romantic or twentieth-century attribution using texture, harmony, melody, dynamics and instrumentation. A vague answer such as "it sounds old" earns nothing.
| Period | Texture | Harmony | Dynamics |
| Baroque | Contrapuntal, continuo | Diatonic, sequences, pedal points | Terraced |
| Classical | Homophonic, Alberti bass | Clear cadences, sonata form | Gradual, but restrained |
| Romantic | Rich, expanded orchestra | Chromatic, extended chords | Extreme, with rubato |
| Twentieth century | Varied, fragmented | Modal, dissonant, quartal | Sudden, unusual accents |
A frequent error is dating a piece by its performing forces alone. A harpsichord does not automatically mean Baroque, and a large orchestra does not automatically mean Romantic. Another error is ignoring phrasing: regularly four-bar phrases and balanced antecedent-consequent pairs point strongly towards the Classical style.
6. Score Reading, Texture and Instrumentation |
Score-reading questions test whether you notice the details that make a passage work. You are expected to recognise clefs, transposing instruments, texture types and instrumental techniques. Alto clef for the viola and tenor clef for the cello and bassoon in high registers are examined regularly.
| Instrument | Written pitch sounds |
| Clarinet in B♭ | A major 2nd lower |
| Trumpet in B♭ | A major 2nd lower |
| Horn in F / Cor anglais | A perfect 5th lower |
| Double bass | An octave lower |
| Piccolo / Xylophone | An octave higher |
Texture terminology must be precise. Monophonic means a single line; homophonic means a melody with chordal accompaniment; polyphonic or contrapuntal means independent simultaneous lines; heterophonic means simultaneous variants of the same line. Candidates lose marks by writing "polyphonic" for any passage with more than one instrument playing.
7. Set Works and Contextual Knowledge |
Questions on the prescribed works test whether you know the music, not just the composer's biography. You should be able to name the work, composer, approximate date, genre and performing forces, and to locate any given extract within the structure of the whole movement.
Answers should be built on musical evidence. If a question asks how tension is created in a passage, refer to harmonic rhythm, dissonance, dynamics, instrumentation and texture. Context is useful only when it explains a musical decision - for example, that a composer wrote for a specific patron, orchestra or national tradition.
