📚 Year 12 AQA French: Case Study Practical Drill | Year 12 AQA
Welcome to this comprehensive case study practice for Year 12 AQA French. In this article, we will dive into a realistic scenario that integrates key themes from the specification, including changing family structures, the cyber-society, volunteering, and cultural heritage. You will learn how to analyse a text, extract relevant ideas, and craft high-level responses for both written and oral exams.
Everything here is modelled on the real demands of the AQA specification: the three assessment objectives, the stimulus card format in the speaking exam, and the analytical writing expected in the written paper. By the end you will have a repeatable five-step method, a model text, a vocabulary bank and a checklist you can use on any unseen material you meet.
1. What is a Case Study Analysis? |
In AQA French at Year 12, a case study analysis typically refers to the process of examining a short scenario or stimulus card that presents a person's life, opinions, or a social situation. You are expected to identify themes, infer meanings, and construct arguments using accurate vocabulary and grammar.
This skill is crucial for both the speaking exam (stimulus card discussion) and the writing paper, where you may need to respond to a context-based question or illustrate points with examples. It also underpins the independent research project at A-level, where you must summarise, analyse and evaluate a source you have chosen yourself.
A case study is therefore not a comprehension exercise in disguise. It is a thinking task: the text gives you raw material, and the marks come from what you do with that material. Retrieval of facts earns limited credit; interpretation, evaluation and accurate language earn the rest.
Three practical rules govern every case study you will meet. First, read the question before the text, because the question tells you which parts of the text matter. Second, always anchor a claim to evidence, quoting or paraphrasing the source. Third, finish with your own judgement, not a summary of what you have already said.
2. The Four Specification Themes in One Scenario |
AQA organises the A-level content under broad themes that Year 12 students begin to explore immediately. Typical Year 12 coverage includes aspects of social change such as changing family structures and the cyber-society, aspects of political and artistic culture such as heritage and volunteering, and the grammar and vocabulary needed to discuss them.
In this article, all four strands are woven into a single piece of source material about one young person. This mirrors exam practice, because stimulus cards and reading passages rarely isolate one theme. They overlap, and recognising the overlap is itself a high-level skill.
The table below shows how a single sentence can serve more than one theme, which is exactly what the best answers exploit.
| Changing family structures | 变化的家庭结构 | Reconstituted families, single parents, same-sex parents, changing roles of men and women | 重组家庭、单亲家庭、同性父母、男女角色变化 | Heritage, values, religion |
| The cyber-society | 网络社会 | Social media, screen time, online activism, data and privacy | 社交媒体、屏幕时间、线上行动主义、数据与隐私 | Volunteering, mental health |
3. The Model Case Study |
Read the following text carefully. It is intentionally compact, around one hundred and fifty words, which is roughly the length of a stimulus card. Notice that no theme is announced explicitly; you have to infer it.
Léa, 17 ans, Nantes |
Translation: "I have lived with my mother and my stepfather for three years. My father lives in Rennes and I see him every other weekend. My grandmother lives with us; she hardly speaks French any more, only Breton with her friends from the club. In the evening I often spend two hours on my phone, mostly on social media, because that is where I talk with my friends. But on Saturday mornings I volunteer with an association that helps elderly people use the Internet. I love it, because I feel useful and I learn things about their lives."
4. Step 1: Skim, Scan and Annotate |
Give yourself ninety seconds for a first pass. Do not translate. Instead, look for four signals: names and relationships, time markers, place names, and any word expressing opinion or emotion such as j'adore, je me sens, parce que.
Time markers in this text are the skeleton: depuis trois ans, un week-end sur deux, le soir, le samedi matin. They reveal a routine and a rhythm, and they will be useful later when you discuss frequency and contrast.
- Relationships: mère, beau-père, père, grand-mère — a reconstituted family across two cities.
- Places: Nantes, Rennes, le club — geography links to regional identity.
- Opinions: j'adore, je me sens utile — evaluative language you can quote.
- Contrast: le soir (phone) against le samedi matin (volunteering) — a structural hinge.
Annotate in the margin with single words, never sentences. If you write long notes, you will run out of time in the exam and you will stop thinking and start copying.
5. Step 2: Identify and Infer Key Ideas |
There is a difference between what the text states and what the text implies. Stated information earns a low tariff. Inferred information, supported by the text, earns more, because it shows that you can reason in French.
For example, the text states that the grandmother hardly speaks French any more and only speaks Breton with her friends. What does this imply? It implies a shift in the family's linguistic heritage, a possible generation gap in communication, and a wider tension between regional language and national language in France.
Equally, the text states that Léa spends two hours an evening on her phone. The inference is not "she is addicted", because the text does not say that. A defensible inference is: "her social life is partly digital, which suggests that for her the internet functions as a means of maintaining friendship rather than as an escape from family life."
Note the phrasing pattern you should reuse: "Cela suggère que..." / "On peut en déduire que..." / "Il est probable que..." These structures signal cautious inference rather than certainty, and examiners reward that nuance.
注意应当重复使用的表达模式:“Cela suggère que...”“On peut en déduire que...”“Il est probable que...”。
6. Step 3: Build a Case-Specific Vocabulary Bank |
Generic vocabulary will only carry you so far. Build a small bank of eight to twelve expressions that belong specifically to the case in front of you, and reuse them in both the written and the oral exam.
| French | 法语 | English | 英语 | Use in this case | 在本案例中的用途 |
| une famille recomposée | a reconstituted family | Describing the household |
| la garde alternée | shared custody | Father in Rennes |
| le lien intergénérationnel | the intergenerational bond | Grandmother at home |
| une langue régionale | a regional language | Breton |
| le temps d'écran | screen time | Two hours a night |
| les réseaux sociaux | social media | Keeping in touch |
| faire du bénévolat | to volunteer | Saturday mornings |
| la fracture numérique | the digital divide | Helping elderly users |
| se sentir utile | to feel useful | Direct quotation |
| le patrimoine local | local heritage | Nantes and Rennes |
Grammar matters as much as vocabulary here. Three structures do disproportionately heavy lifting in case study answers: the present tense for describing, the imperfect or perfect for contrasting past and present, and the subjunctive after expressions of necessity and emotion.
7. Step 4: Writing a High-Level Analytical Response |
A strong written answer follows a predictable architecture, and predictability is a virtue in an exam because it frees your attention for language. Use four paragraphs and no more.
- Paragraph 1: Identify what the document is and what it is broadly about.
- Paragraph 2: Extract two or three specific ideas with reference to the text.
- Paragraph 3: Analyse causes, consequences or contrasts, adding cultural knowledge.
- Paragraph 4: Give a personal evaluation and a brief conclusion.
Sentence openers are the scaffolding of the whole response. Learn them as chunks rather than building them word by word under pressure.
| Presenting the document | Ce document présente le quotidien d'une adolescente... |
Keep your tenses consistent within each paragraph. Shifting from present to past and back without a reason is one of the most common causes of lost accuracy marks at this level.
8. Step 5: The Speaking Exam and the Stimulus Card |
In the speaking exam you will be given a card with a short stimulus and two questions. You have a few minutes of preparation time, and then you must discuss the card and answer follow-up questions.
Preparation strategy is simple but strict. Spend one third of your time decoding the card, one third planning six to eight key expressions, and one third rehearsing your opening two sentences out loud in your head. Never script whole paragraphs; you will not be able to recite them naturally.
During the discussion, aim to do three things in each answer: answer, justify, and extend. An answer that stops after "Oui, je suis d'accord" will not reach the top band.
Réponse → Justification → Exemple / Ouverture
Expect the examiner to push you further with questions such as "Et vous, que pensez-vous du bénévolat obligatoire?" or "Pensez-vous que les réseaux sociaux remplacent les relations familiales?" Prepare a personal position on each of the four themes before the exam, because you cannot improvise opinions under pressure.
9. Common Pitfalls and Examiner Expectations |
Most lost marks at Year 12 come from a small number of repeated habits rather than from a lack of intelligence or effort. Identifying them early saves months of unproductive practice.
- Retelling the text instead of analysing it.
- Using impressive vocabulary inaccurately. |
- Ignoring the question's command word, for example "Analysez" versus "Décrivez". |
- Writing long introductions that contain no content. |
- Forgetting to give a personal opinion where one is required. |
- Memorising model answers and forcing them onto the wrong question. |
What examiners reward is consistent and measurable. They look for relevant ideas supported by the source, a range of vocabulary and structures that are used accurately, an ability to organise ideas logically, and where required, a clear personal response.
Accuracy is graded more strictly than ambition. A correct simple sentence scores better than a broken complex one. Build complexity only on structures you can control absolutely.
10. Deeper Cultural Context for This Case |
To move from a good answer to an excellent one, you need cultural knowledge that is accurate and specific. Three points are relevant to the text above.
First, the reconstituted family is now a normal feature of French society, and public discussion focuses not on whether it is legitimate but on how children manage transitions between two homes and sometimes two cities. Vocabulary such as beau-père, demi-frère and garde alternée belongs to this discussion.
Second, regional languages in France have a contested history. Breton, Occitan, Basque and Alsatian were long discouraged in schools, and although article 75-1 of the Constitution recognises them as part of France's heritage, their transmission within families has declined sharply. A grandmother who speaks Breton with her club is therefore not simply an anecdote; she represents a generation of speakers whose language did not pass to the next generation.
Third, volunteering in France is often framed as engagement citoyen rather than as a way to strengthen a university application, and the service civique scheme reflects that civic framing. Comparing this with the more CV-driven culture in some other countries makes for an excellent evaluation point.
Fourth, the digital divide among the elderly is a recognised policy concern in France, with public campaigns and municipal workshops encouraging people to use online administrative services. Léa's Saturday morning activity sits precisely at the intersection of the cyber-society and volunteering.
11. Worked Model Answer |
The following model answer responds to the question: "Analysez comment ce document reflète les changements dans la société française contemporaine." Read it as a template, not as something to memorise.
