1. Why Consider University Requirements Early? |
Researching university entry requirements early in Year 12 allows you to align your remaining A-level studies with your goals. Many top universities publish detailed grade and subject requirements for psychology degrees. By knowing these now, you can focus on achieving the required grades and even adjust your subject combinations if needed.
For example, some universities strongly prefer students to take at least one science A-level alongside Psychology. If you are currently only taking humanities subjects, you might consider switching to a biology or chemistry course at the start of Year 12, or strengthening your science profile through other means.
2. The Value of AQA Psychology A-Level | AQA 心理学 A-Level 的价值
AQA Psychology A-level is widely respected by UK universities. It provides a rigorous grounding in research methods, biological, cognitive, and social approaches, which are directly relevant to undergraduate psychology. Universities appreciate the scientific literacy and critical thinking skills developed through this specification.

3. Typical Entry Requirements for Psychology Degrees |
Psychology is a competitive degree in the UK. Typical A-level offers range from A*AA to ABB, depending on the university. Many Russell Group universities ask for AAA or A*AA. For instance, the University of Oxford usually requires A*AA, while the University of Manchester might require AAA. Contextual offers can lower these by one or two grades.
In addition to grades, some universities specify that certain subjects should be included. For example, they may require one science subject from Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, or Psychology itself. AQA Psychology often counts as a science subject, but it is essential to verify each university's policy.
4. Subject Requirements: Is Psychology A-Level Essential?
Surprisingly, most UK universities do not require Psychology A-level to study a psychology degree. However, they do value it highly. For example, the University of Cambridge does not list Psychology as an essential subject, but it does mention that 'Psychology A-level can be helpful'. Many students are accepted with A-levels in Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, or even Economics.
At the other end, some universities, like the University of Bath, explicitly state that Psychology is a preferred subject. For AQA Psychology students, this is reassuring news: your subject is highly regarded, but you won't be at a disadvantage if you didn't take it, as long as you have other strong science subjects.
5. Russell Group Universities: A Closer Look |
The Russell Group comprises 24 leading UK universities. Their entry requirements for psychology degrees can vary significantly. It's important to look beyond the headline grades and consider subject combinations. Many Russell Group universities publish 'facilitating subjects' lists, though these have been replaced by more specific guidance. Psychology is often classified alongside sciences.
For instance, Imperial College London does not offer a single-honours psychology degree but has related courses like Psychology with Cognitive Neuroscience, often requiring A*AA with an A in Mathematics or a science. Meanwhile, University College London (UCL) requires AAA and recommends a range of subjects including Psychology, Biology, and Mathematics.
