📚 Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg: History, Faculties and Study Guide |
Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg is one of Germany's oldest and most respected universities, yet it is also one of the least understood outside Europe. Its story begins long before 1817, the year usually given as its founding date, because the institution was created by merging two much older universities in two different cities. Today the university combines a Reformation-era heritage with modern laboratories, a large teaching hospital and a broad range of humanities and social science departments, and it attracts students from Germany and around the world.
1. At a Glance |
Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg, known in German as Martin-Luther-Universität Halle-Wittenberg or simply MLU, is a public research university in the federal state of Saxony-Anhalt. Its institutes, lecture halls and clinics are spread across two historic cities: Halle (Saale), the larger and livelier of the two, and Lutherstadt Wittenberg, the small town on the Elbe where the Reformation began. Roughly 20,000 students are enrolled across nine faculties, and the university is particularly well known in medicine, the natural sciences and the humanities.

2. Historical Roots: 1817 and Two Older Universities |
The year 1817 is usually given as the founding date, but it marks a merger rather than a beginning. The University of Wittenberg, also called the Leucorea, was founded in 1502 by Frederick the Wise, Elector of Saxony, and soon became one of the most influential universities in central Europe. The University of Halle was founded in 1694 and developed into a centre of the Enlightenment and of Pietism, associated with scholars such as Christian Thomasius and the reformer August Hermann Francke. After the Napoleonic Wars, the Prussian state merged the two institutions, joining the resources of Wittenberg to the university in Halle.
1502 (Wittenberg) + 1694 (Halle) → 1817 (Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg)
Wittenberg was not abandoned altogether. In the 1990s the Leucorea foundation was revived on the old site as an academic conference and research centre, and the university still maintains a presence in the town, offering seminars, summer courses and doctoral events under its name.
3. Martin Luther, the Reformation and the University's Name |
The university's name honours Martin Luther, who joined the faculty at Wittenberg in 1512 and in 1517 published the Ninety-five Theses, a text that set off the Reformation. Luther taught, preached and wrote in Wittenberg for most of his career, and he is buried in the Castle Church there, together with his close collaborator Philipp Melanchthon. Melanchthon in turn reshaped the university's curriculum and helped organise Protestant education across Europe. In 1933 the university was officially renamed Martin Luther University, formalising a connection that students and historians had long recognised.
- Luther's Wittenberg: the Castle Church and the Luther House form a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
- Reformation studies remain a teaching and research strength at MLU, especially within the Faculty of Theology.
- The name is a reminder that the university sees itself as part of a long European intellectual tradition, not only a modern research institution.
4. Academic Profile and Research Standing |
MLU is a comprehensive university, which means it covers a very wide academic spectrum rather than specialising in a single field. Its nine faculties run programmes in theology, law, economics and business, medicine, the humanities, social sciences, education, mathematics, computer science and the natural sciences. As a research university it hosts interdisciplinary centres, graduate schools and structured doctoral programmes, and it cooperates closely with non-university institutes in the region. It also partners with Leipzig and Jena in a central German university alliance that shares research infrastructure and international marketing.
Halle's wider scientific environment adds another layer. The German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina, founded in 1652 and today the country's national academy, is headquartered in the city, and the Weinberg Campus hosts institutes of the Max Planck Society, the Fraunhofer Society and the Leibniz Association. For graduate students this means access to extra laboratories, joint projects and supervision networks beyond their own faculty.
5. Medicine and Health Sciences |
Medicine is arguably the university's most visible strength. The Faculty of Medicine works hand in hand with the University Hospital Halle (Saale), a large teaching hospital where students meet real patients from an early stage of their studies. Teaching combines lectures and seminars with bedside teaching, clinical rotations and a final practical year, so that scientific knowledge and clinical practice develop together. Research groups at the faculty work on cancer, cardiovascular disease, immunology, reproduction and health services, often in cooperation with institutes on the Weinberg Campus.
- Clinical practice is built into the curriculum, not added at the end.
- Medical students learn in small groups and rotate through hospital departments.
- The faculty trains physicians, dentists and researchers, contributing to healthcare in Saxony-Anhalt and beyond.
6. Natural Sciences, Mathematics and Engineering |
Natural sciences form the second pillar of the university's research profile. Faculties and institutes cover biosciences, pharmacy, chemistry, physics, mathematics, computer science, geosciences and agricultural sciences. Pharmacy has a particularly long tradition in Halle, which has been a centre of pharmaceutical teaching and research for centuries, and the Institute of Pharmacy remains closely linked with the chemistry and bioscience departments. The nearby Botanical Garden supports teaching in plant sciences and is also used by the wider public.
Applied and engineering-related research is developed through cooperation with external institutes, particularly on the Weinberg Campus, where materials science, microelectronics and biotechnology are studied. This structure gives students in the natural sciences the chance to carry out project work and final theses in well-equipped
