📚 Year 12 Cambridge Geography: A Level Transition Guide | 剑桥Year 12地理：A-level升学衔接指南
Starting Year 12 Cambridge Geography marks a significant step up from IGCSE. The course demands deeper understanding, analytical writing and the ability to evaluate complex interactions between people and environments. This guide provides a practical roadmap to help you bridge the gap and lay a strong foundation for AS success.
1. Understanding the Leap from IGCSE to AS Geography | 理解从IGCSE到AS地理的跨越
At IGCSE, questions often require description and listing of causes. In AS Geography you must explain processes, link concepts across topics and justify arguments with evidence.
The volume and depth of case studies increase sharply. You are expected to know specific facts, statistics and locations to support high-mark answers, not simply general patterns.
Examiners reward evaluation and judgement. You will need to assess the relative importance of factors and reach a reasoned conclusion, which is rarely required at IGCSE level.
2. Overview of the Cambridge AS Geography Syllabus (9696) | 剑桥AS地理大纲(9696)概览
The Cambridge AS Geography (9696) syllabus consists of two compulsory papers taken at the end of Year 12. Understanding the structure early helps you plan revision effectively.
| Paper | Content | Duration & Marks | Weighting |
|---|---|---|---|
| Paper 1: Core Physical Geography | Hydrology and fluvial geomorphology; Atmosphere and weather; Rocks and weathering | 1.5 hours, 60 marks | 50% |
| Paper 2: Core Human Geography | Population; Migration; Settlement dynamics | 1.5 hours, 60 marks | 50% |
Each paper includes data-response questions and extended essay questions. All questions are compulsory, so you must be confident across the entire core content.
Time management is critical: you have 90 minutes to score 60 marks, so regular timed practice with past papers is essential from the start.
3. Core Physical Geography: Key Themes and Expectations |
Hydrology and fluvial geomorphology examines drainage basins, river discharge, channel processes and resulting landforms. You will interpret storm hydrographs and evaluate flood management strategies.
Atmosphere and weather covers the global energy budget, atmospheric circulation, winds and precipitation systems. Understanding the spatial distribution of climate is essential.
Rocks and weathering focuses on plate tectonics, weathering types and mass movement. You must link tectonic processes to hazards and use precise case study data.
Each theme demands at least two detailed case studies. For example, a river flood event must include discharge data, causes, impacts on people and the environment, and an assessment of management responses.
4. Core Human Geography: Key Themes and Expectations |
Population deals with change indicators, the demographic transition model, structure and issues of overpopulation and underpopulation. Critical evaluation of population policies is expected.
Migration covers push-pull factors, internal and international flows, and consequences for source and host areas. In-depth case studies such as Mexico-USA migration are essential.
Settlement dynamics explores rural and urban settlements, land use models, urbanisation and management of urban challenges. You will compare case studies from MEDCs and LEDCs.
