📚 Year 12 Cambridge Physics: Common Misconceptions and Corrections | 剑桥Year 12物理常见误区与纠正方法
Misconceptions in physics are not random gaps in memory; they are stable, self-consistent ideas that students build from everyday experience and then carry into the examination hall. They survive revision because they feel obvious, and they cost marks because examiners test exactly the situations in which they break down. This article collects the most frequent misunderstandings encountered by Year 12 Cambridge Physics students, explains why each one feels right, and provides the correction, the correct reasoning and the equation that settles the argument.
Each section below follows the same structure: the misconception, the reason it arises, the correction, and a practical check you can apply in an exam. Use the section headings as a diagnostic checklist before your next test.
1. Misconception: A Force Is Required to Keep an Object Moving |
Many learners hold the Aristotelian view that a constant force is needed to maintain motion. They justify it with everyday experience: push a book across a table and it stops the moment the push stops, so motion appears to demand a continuing push.
Newton's First Law corrects this. An object continues to move at constant velocity unless acted on by a resultant external force. The book does not stop because the push is removed; it stops because friction now provides a resultant force opposing the motion, so the object decelerates.
In the absence of friction, in deep space or on a well-levelled air track, a moving object glides indefinitely with no driving force at all. This is why the correct statement concerns the resultant force, not any single force, and why "no force" and "no motion" are not the same statement.
Correction tip: en ΣF = 0, the velocity is constant; constant includes zero but is not restricted to zero.
Newton's First Law: if ΣF = 0, then v = constant (including v = 0)
2. Misconception: Heavier Objects Fall Faster Than Lighter Ones |
The classic image is a feather and a hammer released together: the hammer lands first, so heavier objects seem to fall faster. Everyday objects such as a stone and a sheet of paper reinforce the same conclusion.
, regardless of mass. In a vacuum the feather and the hammer land together. Near the Earth's surface the free-fall acceleration is g = 9.81 m s⁻², and it is independent of m.
Air resistance explains the illusion rather than the physics. Drag depends mainly on shape, size and speed, not on mass, so its decelerating effect equals Fdrag ÷ m, which is smaller for a larger mass. A heavier object is therefore less slowed by the same drag, and the difference disappears once drag is removed.
Correction tip: define free fall as "only the weight acts". If air resistance is mentioned, the resultant force is mg − Fdrag and the acceleration is no longer g.
Free fall: a = (mg − Fdrag) ÷ m → g when Fdrag → 0
自由落体:a = (mg − Fdrag) ÷ m,当 Fdrag → 0 时 a → g
3. Misconception: Mass and Weight Are the Same Thing |
Students often write "the weight is 5 kg" or "the mass is 50 N", and treat the two words as synonyms for "how much stuff". The confusion is partly linguistic, because everyday English uses "weight" for what is measured on a bathroom scale.
s a force measured in newtons; it is the gravitational pull on the object, W = mg, and it changes with the local gravitational field strength.
it N kg⁻¹ is identical to m s⁻², which is why g can be described both as field strength and as acceleration.
| Varies with location 随位置变化 | No 不变 | Yes 改变 |
Correction tip: never write "kg" ter the word weight. If the question says weight, answer in newtons and start from W = mg.
W = mg | g = 9.81 N kg⁻¹ on Earth, 1.62 N kg⁻¹ on the Moon
W = mg | 地球 g = 9.81 N kg⁻¹,月球 g = 1.62 N kg⁻¹
Because third-law pairs are equal in magnitude and opposite in direction, students conclude that they cancel and that nothing can ever accelerate. This reasoning appears elegant but is wrong.
resultant; only forces acting on the same body may be combined. The correct statement is FAB = −FBA B, and B pushes A, with the same force type, at the same instant, in opposite directions.
The classic exam trap is the book resting on a table. The weight of the book and the normal contact force are equal and opposite, but they act on the same body, so they can be an equilibrium pair, yet they are not a third-law pair: one is gravitational, the other is contact. The third-law partner of the book's weight is the gravitational pull the book exerts on the Earth.
Correction tip: before calling a pair a third-law pair, check three things: same type of force, opposite directions, and two different bodies.
Newton's Third Law: FAB = −FBA (different bodies, same force type, simultaneous)
牛顿第三定律:FAB = −FBA(不同物体、同种力、同时出现)
5. Misconception: At Terminal Velocity There Is No Force, and Acceleration Always Means Speeding Up | 误区五:终端速度时不受力,且"加速"就意味着变快
Two errors travel together. First, students think a falling object at terminal velocity has no forces acting on it, or has come to rest. Second, they treat acceleration as a synonym for "getting faster".
At terminal velocity the drag force has grown until it equals the weight, so the resultant force is zero and the acceleration is zero; the object continues downwards at its maximum, constant speed. Balanced forces mean constant velocity, not rest.
Acceleration is any change in the velocity vector, so it includes slowing down and changing direction, not just speeding up. An object moving in a circle at constant speed is accelerating because its direction changes; a braking car has acceleration directed opposite to its motion.
Correction tip: own vertically upwards has v = 0 at the top while a = g downwards, still about 9.81 m s⁻².
Terminal velocity: mg = Fdrag → ΣF = 0 → a = 0, v = constant (maximum)
6. Misconception: Momentum and Kinetic Energy Are Basically the Same Idea |
Because both are calculated from mass and velocity, students often use the two terms interchangeably, and assume that whatever is conserved for one is conserved for the other.
ion and explosion provided no external resultant force acts. Kinetic energy is a scalar, Ek = ½mv², measured in joules, and it is conserved only in perfectly elastic interactions.
In an inelastic collision, momentum is still conserved but kinetic energy is not; the difference is transferred to thermal energy, sound and permanent deformation. The safe exam rule is: momentum is the quantity to conserve, and then check separately whether kinetic energy also survives.
The two quantities also scale differently with speed, which is why doubling a car's speed doubles its momentum but quadruples its kinetic energy, and therefore roughly quadruples the braking distance.
Correction tip: remember the link Ek lets you convert between the two in one line and exposes any careless confusion instantly.
p = mv, Δp = FΔt,
