📚 Common Misconceptions in SQA Philosophy and How to Correct Them | SQA

Many Year 12 students tackling SQA Higher Philosophy find themselves tripped up not by a lack of effort, but by persistent misconceptions about what the subject demands. Philosophy is not merely a collection of opinions or a battle of rhetorical skill; it is a rigorous discipline that prizes clarity, logical structure and critical evaluation. When learners misunderstand the nature of an argument, conflate description with analysis, or reduce complex theories to slogans, their essays lose precision and depth. This article identifies the most common pitfalls seen in the classroom and in SQA marking, and offers clear correction strategies to help you refine your philosophical writing and thinking.

1. Confusing an Argument with an Explanation |

A very common error in early philosophy essays is to present an explanation for why someone believes a claim, rather than an argument that gives reasons to support the truth of the claim itself. For instance, writing 'Mill thinks that higher pleasures are better because he was influenced by his father's utilitarian circle' explains a psychological cause, but it does nothing to justify the normative claim. In SQA Philosophy, an argument must contain premises that logically lead to a conclusion, not a causal story about how a thinker arrived at a view.

The correction is straightforward: always ask yourself, 'What reasons could convince a rational person that this conclusion is true?' Instead of explaining the origin of a belief, construct a chain of premises. In the case of Mill, you should set out the qualitative hedonist argument: competent judges who have experienced both types of pleasure prefer the higher ones, and their preference is the only evidence available for measuring quality; therefore, higher pleasures are intrinsically superior. This shifts the focus from biography to logic, which is exactly what SQA examiners reward.

2. Treating Ethical Relativism as a Self-Evident Truth |

Many students enter Higher Philosophy believing that because different cultures have different moral codes, there can be no objective moral truths. They deploy cultural differences as a knock-down argument for relativism, often without realising they are making a jump from descriptive facts about diversity to a normative claim about the non-existence of universal values. This leap – the so-called 'cultural differences argument' – is logically flawed: the fact that people disagree about what is right does not prove that no one is right, any more than disagreement about the shape of the Earth proves that there is no objective geographical fact.

To overcome this, you need to distinguish between descriptive relativism (the anthropological observation that moral beliefs vary) and meta-ethical relativism (the philosophical thesis that the truth of moral judgements is relative to a culture or individual). The correction is to treat relativism as a position to be argued for, not a default starting point. Explore challenges such as the problem of moral progress – if relativism is true, the claim that abolishing slavery represents moral improvement becomes difficult to sustain, because there would be no culture-transcending standard by which to judge it an improvement. Use such critical points to evaluate relativism rather than simply assuming it.

3. Presenting Utilitarianism as a Simple 'Greatest Happiness' Slogan |

When students write about utilitarianism in the SQA examination, a frequent mistake is to reduce the theory to the phrase 'the greatest good for the greatest number' and then move immediately to evaluating it. This misses the internal complexity of the utilitarian tradition. Act utilitarianism, rule utilitarianism and preference utilitarianism are distinct formulations with different implications, and ignoring these distinctions leads to superficial criticism. For example, claiming that utilitarianism allows the sacrifice of innocent individuals is a charge that rule utilitarianism often avoids, yet students rarely address such nuance.

The correction is to treat the utilitarian family with precision. When discussing Bentham, focus on his hedonistic calculus and quantitative approach. When examining Mill, highlight his qualitative distinction between higher and lower pleasures, which already modifies the calculus. And when introducing contemporary versions, explain how Hare's two-level utilitarianism or Singer's preference utilitarianism refines the theory further. In your evaluation, always specify which version of utilitarianism you are targeting. A criticism that works against simple act utilitarianism may not touch a sophisticated rule-utilitarian framework, and demonstrating this awareness shows the examiner you have moved beyond a slogan-level understanding.

4. Misreading the Is-Ought Gap as an Automatic Refutation |

After encountering Hume's is-ought distinction, many students start wielding it as if it were a universal logical machete that can cut down any moral argument. They will write, 'This argument derives an ought from an is, therefore it is invalid.' While Hume did point out that many moralists slide imperceptibly from descriptive premises to normative conclusions without justification, he did not claim that no such move is ever justified. In fact, many robust naturalist theories in ethics precisely aim to show that moral properties can be grounded in natural facts. Treating the is-ought gap as a conversation-stopper is a misunderstanding both of Hume and of ethical naturalism.

The correction is to use the is-ought gap as a critical tool that raises a challenge, not as a definitive refutation. When you encounter an argument that moves from an empirical premise (e.g. 'humans have evolved to be empathetic') to a moral conclusion ('therefore we ought to be empathetic'), the appropriate philosophical move is to ask: What is the missing premise that bridges the gap? Perhaps a premise like 'traits that promote human flourishing are morally good' is implicitly assumed. Your task is to expose, examine and evaluate that bridging premise, not to dismiss the entire argument with a wave of Hume's name.

5. Confusing Determinism with Fatalism in Free Will Debates |

In discussions about free will and responsibility, it is alarmingly common for students to conflate determinism with fatalism. They write as if determinism claims that 'whatever will be will be, no matter what we do,' which is a fatalistic outlook. Determinism, however, is the thesis that every event, including human choices, is the necessary result of prior causes in accordance with the laws of nature. Under determinism, our choices still matter – they are part of the causal chain. Fatalism, by contrast, suggests that outcomes are fixed regardless of our choices, which is a very different view. Conflating the two undermines the entire discussion of compatibilism and makes the free will problem seem simpler than it is.

The correction lies in keeping definitions precise and illustrating the difference with examples. Determinism says: given your genetic makeup, past experiences and current environment, you will choose tea over coffee, but the choice is still a genuine link in the chain. Fatalism says: whether you deliberate for an hour or flip a coin, the outcome is already settled by fate. Once this distinction is clear, you can properly engage with compatibilist arguments, which hold that free will requires not the absence of causation, but the right kind of causation – acting from your own desires and beliefs without coercion. A student who carefully navigates this distinction demonstrates a mature grasp of the core debate.

6. Reducing the Mind-Body Problem to 'The Brain Does It' | 把心身问题简化成“都是大脑干的”

When discussing Cartesian dualism or the nature of consciousness, students often try to bypass centuries of philosophical work by asserting that 'mental states are just brain states' as if this were an obvious empirical discovery. This move, known as identity theory or reductive physicalism, is indeed a serious philosophical position, but it requires argument rather than assertion. Moreover, simple identity claims do not automatically explain the qualitative, first-person character of experience – what it is like to see red or feel pain. The misconception is to treat the mind-body problem as solved by neuroscience, when in fact neuroscience provides data that itself needs philosophical interpretation.

The correction is to recognise that the explanatory gap remains even after we identify neural correlates of consciousness. Use thought experiments like Frank Jackson's 'Mary the colour scientist' to bring out this point: Mary knows all the physical facts about colour vision but learns something new when she sees red for the first time, suggesting that there are non-physical facts about experience. Whether you ultimately accept or reject this argument, engaging with it directly shows that you understand the mind-body problem is not merely a gap in our scientific knowledge but a conceptual puzzle about the relationship between objective description and subjective experience.

7. Offering Weak Counterarguments in Evaluation |

A section of the SQA Higher paper requires students to critically evaluate philosophical positions, but many weaken their performance by including counterarguments that are either trivial or misdirected. A common example is to respond to a well-developed argument with a simple 'I disagree because I think differently' or 'This does not align with my intuition.' Such subjective responses do not constitute philosophical evaluation. Another frequent mistake is to attack only a secondary or poorly chosen aspect of an argument, leaving the core position untouched – a classic straw man. The SQA assessment standard demands evaluative comments that are relevant, developed and supported by reasoning.

The correction is to treat evaluation as a structured intellectual task. For any argument you examine, first ensure you have represented it charitably – reconstruct it in its strongest form. Then, identify a specific premise or inference that is genuinely vulnerable. Offer a clear counterexample, a reductio ad absurdum, or point to an internal inconsistency. For example, when evaluating Kant's claim that a good will is the only unqualified good, you might argue that certain character traits like courage also seem good in themselves, not merely as means, and explore how a Kantian might respond. This kind of dialectical engagement demonstrates the analytical depth that distinguishes high-level answers.

8. Neglecting the Role of Syllogisms and Logical Form |

Philosophy without logic is like mathematics without arithmetic. Yet many students shy away from formalising arguments into syllogisms or simple logical structures, thinking it is an optional extra. The SQA specification does not require formal symbolic logic, but it does reward the ability to identify premises and conclusions and to display an argument's shape clearly. When a student writes a long, flowing paragraph of prose summary, the logical relations are often buried. The misconception is that being 'philosophical' means writing in a sophisticated literary style, when in fact the clearest philosophical writing often displays its skeleton explicitly.

The correction is to make the logic of your essays visible. Before drafting a paragraph, try to set out the argument you are discussing in standard form: Premise 1, Premise 2, therefore Conclusion. Even if you do not write it out in bullet points in the final essay, this discipline will sharpen your own understanding and ensure that your evaluative comments target specific premises. For example, when examining Anselm's ontological argument, break it down: P1: God is that than which nothing greater can be conceived; P2: Existing in reality is greater than existing only in the mind; C: Therefore, God must exist in reality. Once the structure is explicit, you can assess whether the concept of greatness justifies the existential leap. This logical transparency brings rigour to your work and makes it far easier for an examiner to follow your line of thought.

9. Oversimplifying the Role of Intuitions and Thought Experiments |

Students often deploy thought experiments as if they were decisive empirical data. They might say, 'The trolley problem shows that utilitarianism is wrong because most people would not push the fat man,' as if the sheer statistical distribution of intuitions settles a normative question. This misunderstands the method of reflective equilibrium in moral philosophy. A thought experiment is a tool for testing the coherence of our principles, not a public opinion poll. Intuitions are starting points for reflection, not final arbiters, and they themselves can be shaped by cultural biases or emotional reactions that need critical scrutiny.

The correction is to explain why a particular intuition should be taken seriously and to consider how an opponent might challenge its reliability. For instance, a utilitarian can reply to the trolley problem by arguing that our reluctance to push stems from a heuristic that generally promotes utility but misfires in artificial scenarios. This moves the debate away from simply counting intuitions and towards a normative discussion about the status of intuitions as evidence. Similarly, when using a thought experiment like Putnam's Twin Earth to explore semantic externalism, show how the intuitive verdict drives an argument, but also acknowledge that if someone does not share the intuition, the dialectical situation changes. This nuanced handling of thought experiments signals genuine philosophical maturity.

10. Failing to Distinguish Between First-Order and Second-Order Questions |

Philosophy is a discipline that constantly moves between first-order questions (Is abortion morally permissible? Does God exist? Are we free?) and second-order questions (What does it mean to say that something is morally permissible? What kind of evidence would count for or against God's existence? What is the meaning of 'free' in this context?). A common weakness in student essays is to jump straight into arguing for a first-order position without clarifying the conceptual framework. This leads to confusion about what exactly is being debated and at what level. The misconception is that philosophy simply involves taking a side on a big issue, whereas in reality a great deal of philosophical progress consists in clarifying the question itself.

The correction is to develop the habit of asking methodological and conceptual questions before offering substantive answers. For instance, before evaluating the argument from design for God's existence, step back and ask: What is the logical character of a teleological argument? Is it deductive, inductive, or abductive? What criteria would make such an argument strong? Similarly, when discussing free will, clarify whether you are examining compatibilist or incompatibilist definitions of freedom, because the very meaning of the term shifts between frameworks. This meta-level awareness demonstrates to the SQA examiner that you are not merely reiterating positions but genuinely doing philosophy.

11. Overusing Rhetorical Questions as Argument Substitutes |

A stylistic habit that weakens many otherwise capable philosophical essays is the excessive use of rhetorical questions in place of reasoned analysis. Sentences like 'But how can we really know what is right?' or 'Who are we to judge another culture?' may convey a tone of deep thinking, but in the context of SQA assessment they often mask an absence of argument. A rhetorical question can gesture at a problem without articulating it, leaving the reader to do the philosophical work. In high-stakes writing, every sentence should earn its place by advancing a claim, providing a reason, or clarifying a concept. Rhetorical questions rarely achieve this.

The correction is to translate every rhetorical question into a clear declarative statement that expresses a challenge. Instead of 'Who are we to judge another culture?' write, 'This objection suggests that any cross-cultural moral judgement lacks legitimate standing unless based on shared values. However, the moral realist can reply that the legitimacy of a judgement does not depend on the acceptance of the judged, but on the existence of objective moral facts.' By spelling out the implicit challenge and offering a response, you transform atmosphere into argument. Your writing gains precision and your critical thinking becomes visible on the page.

12. Ignoring the Distinction Between Justification and Truth |

In epistemology sections of the Higher, students often treat 'justified belief' as synonymous with 'true belief' or assume that if a belief is justified, it must be true. This confusion is particularly damaging when discussing Gettier cases or evaluating different theories of knowledge. The point of a Gettier case is precisely that a belief can be both justified and true yet still not count as knowledge, because the justification and the truth can come apart in a lucky way. Treating justification as a guarantee of truth misses the whole point of post-Gettier epistemology and makes it impossible to understand why the tripartite definition of knowledge is under pressure.

The correction is to internalise the logical space opened up by the separation of justification and truth. Draw a simple table in your mind: a belief can be (1) justified and true, (2) justified and false, (3) unjustified and true, or (4) unjustified and false. Knowledge is not simply category (1) – as Gettier shows, we need something more, such as a condition to rule out epistemic luck. When evaluating a definition of knowledge, test it against these categories. For example, ask whether a reliabilist account that defines knowledge as true belief produced by a reliable process can handle cases where the process is normally reliable but malfunctions in a particular instance, leading to a true belief that is only accidentally correct. Understanding that justification is a step on the road to truth, not its mirror, is essential for sophisticated epistemological evaluation.
