1. What Is SQA Higher Psychology?
The SQA Higher Psychology course explores the scientific study of mind and behaviour through three compulsory units: Individual Behaviour, Social Behaviour, and Research. You will investigate how memory works, why we sleep and dream, how stress affects health, and why people obey authority, among other topics. The research unit equips you with practical skills in designing studies, analysing data and evaluating ethical issues.
SQA Higher
2. How to Study Psychology Effectively |
Psychology is a content-rich subject that requires both factual recall and the ability to apply concepts to novel scenarios. Start by building a glossary of key terms as you read. Use active recall by testing yourself with flashcards, and practise structuring extended-response answers using the PEEL (Point, Evidence, Explanation, Link) framework. Regularly drawing mind maps linking theories, studies and evaluations will help you see the bigger picture.
3. Memory: The Multi-Store Model |
Atkinson and Shiffrin's multi-store model describes memory as a flow of information through sensory register, short-term memory (STM) and long-term memory (LTM). Information is transferred from STM to LTM via rehearsal. Each store differs in capacity, duration and encoding. You will also learn about supporting evidence, such as Glanzer and Cunitz's serial position effect, and the case study of HM, who lost the ability to form new memories after brain surgery.
4. Sleep and Dreams: Restoration Theory |
Oswald's restoration theory proposes that sleep allows the body and brain to repair and recover. Slow-wave sleep (SWS) is linked to body restoration, while rapid eye movement (REM) sleep aids brain recovery and memory consolidation. Contrast this with the evolutionary approach, such as Webb's hibernation theory, which explains sleep as a way to conserve energy and keep animals safe during periods of vulnerability.
5. Stress: The General Adaptation Syndrome |
Selye's General Adaptation Syndrome (GAS) describes three stages of the body's response to stress: alarm, resistance and exhaustion. Alarm involves the fight-or-flight response; during resistance the body tries to cope long-term, depleting resources; exhaustion occurs when reserves are drained, leading to illness. Critically evaluate GAS by noting its reliance on rat research and its neglect of individual differences such as appraisal and coping style.
Stanley Milgram's experiments on obedience to authority revealed that 65% of participants were willing to administer what they believed were dangerous electric shocks to another person when instructed by an authority figure. The study demonstrated the power of situational factors, such as proximity, uniform and location. Criticisms focus on ethical issues (deception, lack of informed consent) and ecological validity, as the task was artificial and the participants were all male.
Stanley Milgram
7. Prejudice: Realistic Conflict Theory |
Sherif's Robbers Cave experiment showed that intergroup hostility can arise from competition for scarce resources, a concept known as realistic conflict theory. When two groups of boys at a summer camp were placed in competitive situations, prejudice and aggression quickly developed. However, Sherif also demonstrated that superordinate goals, tasks requiring cooperation, could reduce conflict and improve intergroup relations.
8. Research Methods: Experimental Design |
Higher Psychology requires you to understand independent groups, repeated measures and matched pairs designs. In independent groups, different participants are used in each condition, which avoids order effects but may introduce participant variables. Repeated measures uses the same participants in all conditions, reducing participant variables but risking order effects such as practice or fatigue. Matched pairs tries to balance both issues by pairing similar participants on key characteristics.
9. Basic Data Analysis: Central Tendency and Dispersion |
You will be expected to calculate and interpret measures of central tendency (mean, median, mode) and measures of dispersion (range, standard deviation). The mean is the arithmetic average, sensitive to outliers; the median is the middle score, robust to skewed data. The range gives a simple spread, while standard deviation quantifies how much scores deviate from the mean, providing a more nuanced picture of variability.
10. Ethical Principles in Psychological Research |
The British Psychological Society (BPS) provides a code of ethics covering informed consent, deception, debriefing, right to withdraw, confidentiality and protection from harm. You must be able to evaluate classic studies against these principles. For instance, Milgram's study breached several guidelines, but researchers argued that the scientific benefits outweighed the costs and that thorough debriefing was provided.
11. Summer Activities to Prepare for Higher Psychology |
Begin by keeping a 'psychology journal' where you note everyday examples of topics you will study: observe obedience in queues, consider how you remember shopping lists, or reflect on your own stress triggers. Read a popular psychology book such as 'Thinking, Fast and Slow' by Daniel Kahneman or watch documentaries on sleep and dreaming. Finally, practise designing a simple survey or experiment on a question that interests you, noting the ethical considerations.
12. Bridging the Gap: From Summer to First Term |
Review this bridging material two weeks before term begins. Create a study timetable that dedicates regular slots to active recall and application tasks. Join online forums or study groups, and familiarise yourself with the SQA Higher Psychology specification and mandatory research topics.
