1. Cell Structure and Organisation |
One of the most common questions involves identifying organelles from diagrams and linking their structure to their function. You must know the differences between plant and animal cells, and how specialised cells such as ciliated epithelial cells or root hair cells are adapted to their jobs.
Learn the organelle list with a function verb attached to each one: the nucleus contains DNA and controls cell activity; the cytoplasm is where most chemical reactions take place; the cell membrane is partially permeable and controls what enters and leaves; ribosomes are the site of protein synthesis; mitochondria are the site of aerobic respiration, releasing energy; chloroplasts contain chlorophyll and absorb light for photosynthesis; the vacuole stores cell sap and maintains turgor.
| Large vacuole 大液泡 | Usually one large 通常一个大的 | Small or none 小或无 |
For magnification questions, always use magnification = image size ÷ actual size, convert both lengths to the same unit, and give the answer without units. For specialisation, name the adaptation and then explain the benefit: a root hair cell has a long thin extension giving a large surface area for water and mineral uptake; a ciliated epithelial cell has tiny hair-like cilia that sweep mucus away; a red blood cell has no nucleus, giving more room for haemoglobin.
A typical mistake is stating that 'mitochondria provide energy' instead of 'mitochondria release energy through respiration'. Another frequent error is confusing the roles of chloroplasts and mitochondria, or failing to mention that the cell wall is freely permeable, not selectively permeable.
When explaining osmosis, students often misuse terms such as 'concentration gradient', writing them without saying which side is more concentrated. Other lost marks come from calling the cell membrane 'permeable', forgetting that bacterial cells have no nucleus, and describing a vacuole as 'empty space' rather than a store of cell sap.
2. Movement In and Out of Cells |
Diffusion, osmosis and active transport appear in every paper, usually with a graph, a potato or beetroot experiment, or an alveolus and villus diagram. The definitions matter, and so does the direction of net movement.
Diffusion: the net movement of particles from a region of higher concentration to a region of lower concentration, down a concentration gradient, as a result of random motion. It is passive.
Osmosis: the net movement of water molecules from a dilute solution (higher water potential) to a more concentrated solution through a partially permeable membrane.
Active transport: movement of ions or molecules against a concentration gradient, using energy released by respiration and carrier proteins.
Typical examples worth memorising: oxygen diffusing into the blood in the alveoli; carbon dioxide diffusing into a leaf; water entering root hair cells by osmosis; mineral ions entering root hair cells by active transport; glucose absorbed from the small intestine.
In the classic potato cylinder experiment, you record the initial mass and the final mass, then calculate the percentage change. Plotting percentage change against sucrose concentration gives a line that crosses zero at the isotonic point, where the water potential of the tissue equals that of the solution. Show the calculation clearly, because both the reading and the processing carry marks.
Common errors include using 'concentration' without specifying solute or water, saying water 'moves to the more concentrated side' without mentioning the membrane, treating osmosis as an active process, and confusing turgid with plasmolysed. Another persistent error is writing 'the cell sucks in water' rather than describing net movement of water molecules from a high to a low water potential.
3. Enzymes and Biological Molecules |
Enzymes are proteins that act as biological catalysts, and they are tested through rates, graphs, temperature and pH, and food tests. Expect a question that gives you a table of results and asks you to calculate a rate or explain a shape on a graph.
The key ideas are specificity (the shape of the active site is complementary to the substrate, the lock-and-key model), lowering of activation energy, optimum temperature and pH, and denaturation. At the optimum temperature the rate is highest because molecules have more kinetic energy and more frequent successful collisions; above it, bonds in the enzyme break, the active site changes shape, the substrate no longer fits, and the rate falls.
| Reducing sugar 还原糖 | Benedict's solution 本尼迪特试剂 | Green to brick red 绿转砖红 |
Enzymes you must be able to name: amylase converts starch to maltose; protease converts proteins to amino acids; lipase converts lipids to fatty acids and glycerol; catalase breaks down hydrogen peroxide. The stomach enzyme pepsin works at acid pH, while salivary amylase works best near pH 7.
Frequent errors: writing that a boiled enzyme is 'killed' (a non-living molecule cannot die, it is denatured); saying the enzyme is used up or changed permanently by the reaction; claiming all enzymes work at 37 °C, which is only true for human enzymes; and writing 'starch is digested into glucose' instead of maltose in the amylase step.
4. Plant Nutrition and Transport |
Photosynthesis is guaranteed to appear, either as an equation, a limiting-factor graph, or a leaf-structure diagram. Write the equation correctly and always state the conditions: light and chlorophyll.
6CO₂ + 6H₂O → C₆H₁₂O₆ + 6O₂
The limiting factors are light intensity, carbon dioxide concentration, temperature and chlorophyll content. On a graph, when the line plateaus, increasing the variable on the x-axis will no longer increase the rate because another factor has become limiting. Say that explicitly - 'because carbon dioxide is now the limiting factor' - rather than just 'because it has reached a maximum'.
Leaf adaptations: the waxy cuticle reduces water loss; the upper epidermis is transparent to let light through; palisade cells contain many chloroplasts and sit near the top; spongy mesophyll has air spaces for gas diffusion; stomata with guard cells allow gas exchange and control water loss; xylem transports water and minerals, phloem transports sucrose and amino acids.
