Map each syllabus section to the chapters in your chosen textbook. Year 11 Cambridge Politics often aligns with foundational units from IGCSE Global Perspectives or an introductory AS-level Politics course; identify overlaps to avoid duplication.
Create a topic checklist in a spreadsheet or notebook. Mark your confidence level (1–5) for each area, then revisit weaker topics regularly using the resources suggested in this guide.
2. Core Textbooks and Study Guides |
Selecting a reliable textbook is the first step towards a solid understanding of political theory, institutions, and comparative politics. The titles below are widely used by Cambridge learners and educators.
- Cambridge International AS and A Level Politics Student Book (Cambridge University Press) – rigorously maps to Cambridge specifications with clear case studies.
- Political Ideologies: An Introduction by Andrew Heywood – explores liberalism, conservatism, socialism, and beyond with accessible language.
- Global Politics by Andrew Heywood – essential for international relations and global governance topics.
- CGP or Oxford Revision Guides (check for latest Politics editions) – concise summaries and quick-fire questions ideal for last-minute review. CGP
Supplement your main textbook with a study guide that provides revision checklists and model answers. Avoid switching between multiple textbooks mid-term, as consistency in terminology is vital for examination answers.
3. Online Learning Platforms and Courses |
Digital platforms can reinforce vocabulary and concepts through active recall. Seneca Learning and Quizlet offer pre-made sets for political terms, while Khan Academy covers the fundamentals of government and democracy.
For a deeper perspective, consider a MOOC such as 'Moral Foundations of Politics' (Yale University) on Coursera or 'Introduction to Political Philosophy' on edX. These free courses expose you to university-level argumentation that will enrich your essay responses.
Join the Cambridge International online community on platforms like the Cambridge Schools Hub to exchange teaching and learning resources. Teacher-led webinars often walk through examiner feedback and new syllabus updates.

4. Official Cambridge Resources and Past Papers |
The Cambridge International website hosts specimen papers, mark schemes, and examiner reports for all qualifications. Download every available resource for your syllabus code; these are the most authentic practice materials.

Study examiner reports carefully: they highlight recurring mistakes, such as confusing 'describe' with 'evaluate', and suggest precisely what examiners look for in high-scoring scripts. Annotate the mark scheme directly on your practice answers.
Create a mock exam timetable using past papers. Start with one paper open-book, then progress to timed, closed-book conditions while resisting the temptation to check notes. This builds the stamina needed for real examinations.
5. Supplementary Reading: Academic Articles and Books |
To reach the top grade boundaries, you must demonstrate wider reading that goes beyond the textbook. Arguments from respected journals and classic texts show examiners a mature grasp of political debate.
|---|---|---|---|
| 'The End of History?' by Francis Fukuyama | "历史的终结？"
| 'The Clash of Civilizations?' by Samuel Huntington | "文明的冲突？"
| 'The Federalist Papers' (selected essays) | 《联邦党人文集》（选篇） | Constitutionalism and separation of powers | 宪政与权力分立 |
Keep a reading log where you summarise the author's thesis, key evidence, and your own critical response in just 150 words. Link each entry to a syllabus topic so it becomes a ready-made revision note.
6. News and Current Affairs Sources |
Politics cannot be studied in a vacuum. Apply concepts like sovereignty, legitimacy, and power to real events by following reliable, non-partisan outlets: BBC News, The Guardian, Al Jazeera, and Reuters provide balanced coverage.
Maintain a current affairs scrapbook organised by theme (elections, civil rights, geopolitical conflicts). For each story, note the political concept it illustrates and draft a short paragraph that could serve as an essay example.
Set a daily 15-minute news review using an app like Flipboard or a podcast such as 'The Intelligence' from The Economist. Consistent, brief exposure is more effective than a weekly marathon session.
