1. Course Overview and Assessment Structure |
Cambridge IGCSE Psychology (syllabus 0990 for 9-1 grading or 0266 for A*-G) explores human behaviour and mental processes through four major approaches: biological, cognitive, social and developmental. The subject is assessed via two written examination papers. Paper 1 tests core studies and research methods, while Paper 2 covers a choice of optional topics together with further methodology questions. Understanding this framework early on allows you to focus your revision and prioritise the most heavily weighted content.
A typical Year 11 student will encounter all four approaches across the two years, with an emphasis on applying psychological knowledge to novel scenarios. The summer bridging period is the perfect time to get acquainted with the specification, secure the basics of research methodology and begin reading around the core studies. Even a few hours of structured preparation each week can make a significant difference when lessons resume.
2. Understanding Research Methods |
Research methods form the backbone of IGCSE Psychology. You are expected not only to describe procedures but also to evaluate them in terms of strengths, weaknesses and ethical implications. The main methods you will encounter include experiments, observations, self-reports and case studies. Each method offers a distinct way of gathering data about human thought and behaviour.
Experiments involve manipulating an independent variable (IV) to measure its effect on a dependent variable (DV) while controlling extraneous variables. This enables psychologists to infer cause-and-effect relationships. Observational methods involve recording behaviour as it occurs naturally or in a controlled setting, without direct manipulation. Observations can be structured, unstructured, participant or non-participant, and each variation carries its own strengths and weaknesses.
Self-report techniques, such as questionnaires and interviews, collect information directly from individuals about their attitudes, feelings and behaviours. While they can access subjective experiences that other methods cannot, they are vulnerable to social desirability bias and response sets. Case studies provide an in-depth, multi-method investigation of a single individual or small group, generating rich qualitative data but often lacking in generalisability and replicability.
3. Experimental Design Essentials |
A well-designed experiment is crucial for valid conclusions. The three main experimental designs you need to master are independent groups, repeated measures and matched pairs. Independent groups design allocates different participants to each condition. This avoids order effects such as practice or boredom, but it requires larger samples and can be confounded by participant variables – individual differences between groups that might affect the DV.
In a repeated measures design, the same participants take part in all conditions. This controls for participant variables and uses fewer participants, but introduces order effects. Counterbalancing can be used to reduce order effects, but they cannot always be eliminated. Matched pairs design aims to combine the best of both worlds: participants are first matched on a relevant variable (e.g., IQ or age) and then one member of each pair is assigned to each condition. This reduces participant variables without creating order effects, but it is time-consuming and difficult to achieve perfect matching.
You also need to be clear about variables: the IV is what the researcher changes or manipulates; the DV is the measured outcome; and control variables are kept constant to ensure a fair test. Confounding variables that unintentionally vary with the IV can threaten the internal validity of an experiment, and these must be anticipated and controlled.
4. Ethical Guidelines in Psychology |
All psychological research in the UK is governed by ethical principles designed to protect participants. For IGCSE, you are required to know and apply the major guidelines: informed consent, avoidance of deception, debriefing, right to withdraw, confidentiality and protection from harm. These principles are not optional extras; they are central to the design, conduct and evaluation of any study.
Informed consent means participants should be given sufficient information about the aims and procedures to decide whether to take part. Where deception is unavoidable for methodological reasons, it must be justified and followed by a thorough debrief that explains the true purpose, restores the participant's well-being and offers the opportunity to withdraw data. The right to withdraw must be made clear at the start, and participants should be able to leave at any time without penalty. Confidentiality ensures that personal data is anonymised and kept secure. Finally, researchers must do everything possible to prevent physical or psychological distress, and any risks must be outweighed by the potential benefits of the research.
5. Key Studies in the Syllabus |
Familiarity with the core studies is non-negotiable for exam success. These landmark investigations provide the evidence base for psychological theories and are often the focus of describe and evaluate questions. Begin by getting to know five iconic studies that span the approaches.
Bartlett (1932) used the Native American folktale 'The War of the Ghosts' to demonstrate that memory is an active, reconstructive process shaped by cultural schemas. Participants omitted unfamiliar details and rationalised the story to fit their own cultural expectations. Loftus and Palmer (1974) showed how leading questions can distort eyewitness memory. In their experiment, the verb used in a question about a car accident ('smashed' versus 'contacted') significantly affected participants' estimates of speed, and those who heard 'smashed' were more likely to report seeing broken glass that was not present. This study is central to the cognitive approach and the understanding of the misinformation effect.
In social psychology, Milgram (1963) revealed disturbingly high levels of obedience when participants were instructed by an authority figure to administer what they believed were dangerous electric shocks to a learner. The study raised profound ethical questions but remains a powerful demonstration of situational factors on behaviour. Bandura et al. (1961) demonstrated observational learning of aggression: children who watched an adult model behave aggressively towards a Bobo doll were more likely to imitate that aggression, particularly when the model was of the same sex. From the developmental approach, Ainsworth's Strange Situation (1978) assessed the quality of infant–caregiver attachment, identifying three main types – secure, insecure-avoidant and insecure-resistant – based on exploration and reunion behaviours.
