1. Setting the Scene: What is Philosophy? |
Philosophy is the systematic attempt to address fundamental questions about existence, knowledge, value, reason, mind, and language. Unlike empirical sciences, it relies primarily on logical analysis, conceptual clarification, and critical argument rather than experiment. A physicist can settle a question by measurement; a philosopher usually settles it by showing that one position is incoherent, question-begging, or supported by better reasons than its rivals.
WJEC Year 12 introduces you to the analytic tradition, which prizes clarity, rigour, and the evaluation of arguments. You will examine competing theories and learn to identify strengths and weaknesses in philosophical positions. The method is dialectical: a thesis is proposed, an objection is raised, the thesis is refined, and the process repeats. In practice this means you should never leave a theory standing unexamined - every definition you learn is also a target for criticism.
The traditional branches you will meet are metaphysics (what ultimately exists), epistemology (knowledge and justification), ethics and metaethics (value and moral language), logic (the form of valid inference), and aesthetics. Most exam questions sit at the intersection of two branches, for example "Can we know that God exists?" combines epistemology and philosophy of religion.
2. How the WJEC Course Is Built and Marked | WJEC
At AS level the specification is organised into themes, and each theme contains a small number of named debates. Your job is not to memorise everything in the textbook but to master the debates that appear in past papers. Themes typically pair a classic argument with its standard objections, so revision is most efficient when you learn them as "argument plus critique" units rather than as isolated facts.
Assessment is essay-based and rewards two broad skills. The first is knowledge and understanding: accurate exposition of theories, thinkers, and technical vocabulary. The second is analysis and evaluation: the ability to construct arguments, identify assumptions, weigh objections, and reach a justified judgement. Marks are lost far more often through pure description than through a slightly shaky quotation.
| Skill | 技能 | What it looks like in an answer | 在答案中的表现 |
| Knowledge / 知识 | Naming the theory and its author correctly, defining terms precisely. |
| Understanding / 理解 | Explaining why the argument is supposed to work, with an example. |
| Analysis / 分析 | Breaking the argument into premises and testing each one. |
| Evaluation / 评估 | Weighing objections and stating which position survives them, and why. |
Always check your own specification booklet and your teacher's guidance, because optional themes and the exact weighting of AS versus A2 can vary between centres and years. What never varies is the demand for clear, structured, judgement-driven writing.
3. Epistemology: The JTB Account of Knowledge | 认识论:JTB 知识解释
Epistemology investigates what knowledge is and how we acquire it. The classical definition, often attributed to Plato, analyses knowledge as justified true belief (JTB). On this view, S knows that P if and only if three conditions are all met: P is true, S believes that P, and S is justified in believing that P. Each condition rules out a different kind of failure.
S knows that P ⇔ (i) P is true; (ii) S believes that P; (iii) S is justified in believing that P.
The truth condition excludes false beliefs: I cannot know that Paris is in Italy, however sincerely I believe it. The belief condition excludes states that are not beliefs at all, such as mere suspicion or hope. The justification condition excludes lucky guesses that happen to be correct - if I guess the winning lottery number with no evidence, I have a true belief but not knowledge.
Two further distinctions matter for WJEC essays. First, justification comes in degrees and in kinds: it can be a priori (reason alone) or a posteriori (experience), and it can be evidential, reliabilist, or virtue-based. Second, knowledge is usually treated as factive: if you know that P, then P must be true, whereas belief is not factive. Keep these distinctions explicit in your answers and you immediately move beyond description.
4. Gettier Problems and the Limits of JTB | 盖蒂尔问题与 JTB 的局限
In 1963 Edmund Gettier published a short paper, "Is Justified True Belief Knowledge?", containing counterexamples designed to show that the three JTB conditions are not sufficient. In one famous case, Smith has strong evidence that Jones will get a job and that Jones has ten coins in his pocket, so he infers that "the person who will get the job has ten coins in his pocket". Smith himself gets the job, and he too happens to have ten coins in his pocket.
The belief is justified, and it is true - yet intuitively Smith does not know it. The truth of the belief is accidental relative to the justification, and this is the structure of every Gettier case: justified true belief plus a dose of bad or double luck. Similar cases can be built with stopped clocks, sheep-shaped rocks, or disjunctive beliefs about distant cities.
Standard responses fall into three families. First, add a fourth condition: no false lemmas, defeasibility, a causal requirement, or a reliabilist requirement that the belief be produced by a reliable process. Second, appeal to intellectual virtue: knowledge is true belief produced by the exercise of epistemic virtues such as careful reasoning and perceptual attentiveness. Third, argue that knowledge is a primitive concept that cannot be analysed into necessary and sufficient conditions at all. Evaluate these, do not merely list them.
A strong critical point to keep in your pocket: as Linda Zagzebski argued, Gettier cases can be generated automatically wherever a definition permits justified yet luckily true belief, so a piecemeal patch may never settle the matter. A second point: whichever way you decide, consider whether the revised definition still matches ordinary usage, and whether it rules out sceptical scenarios as effectively as JTB did.
5. Rationalism, Empiricism, and the Sources of Knowledge |
Where does knowledge come from? Rationalists such as Descartes and Leibniz argue that reason is an independent source of knowledge and that some ideas or truths are innate, or at least knowable a priori. The cogito - "I think, therefore I am" - is the paradigm: it is supposed to be certain without depending on any particular sensory experience, and it survives the most radical doubt.
Empiricists such as Locke and Hume argue that all knowledge begins with experience. Locke describes the mind as a blank slate, a tabula rasa, furnished by sensation and reflection. Hume goes further, holding that every simple idea must be traceable to a prior impression, and dividing meaningful claims into relations of ideas (knowable a priori, e.g. mathematics) and matters of fact (knowable only a posteriori, e.g. causal claims).
The central critical move is to test both sides against cases. Rationalists must explain how innate ideas differ from dispositions and why disagreement and error are so common if such truths are innate. Empiricists must explain mathematical necessity and the concept of causation, which Hume famously reduces to constant conjunction and custom. Kant's attempted synthesis - that concepts without intuitions are empty and intuitions without concepts are blind - is an excellent position to bring in as a third option and to evaluate.
6. Perception: Realism, Idealism, and the Veil of Perception |
Perception is the bridge between mind and world, and it generates some of the sharpest problems in the course. Direct realism holds that we perceive physical objects themselves, and that perceptual experience is transparent: when you look at a tree, you are directly aware of the tree, not of an inner image. This fits common sense and makes knowledge of the external world relatively unproblematic.
Direct realism faces the arguments from illusion, hallucination, perceptual variation, and the time lag. In an illusion, the object appears other than it is, yet the experience itself is indistinguishable in kind from a veridical one; in a hallucination, the experience occurs without any object at all. The time-lag argument notes that when you see the sun you see it as it was about eight minutes ago, so what you are immediately aware of is arguably not the present object.
Indirect realism, or representative realism, responds that we perceive mind-dependent sense-data that represent mind-independent objects. Locke supports this with the primary/secondary quality distinction: shape, size, and motion are in objects, while colour, taste, and smell are powers to produce ideas in us. The cost is the veil of perception: if we are only ever directly aware of sense-data, how can we know what lies behind them? Scepticism threatens.
