📚 National Taiwan University (NTU): Taiwan's Premier University |
National Taiwan University (NTU), officially named National Taiwan University and affectionately known in Chinese as Taida, is one of the oldest, largest and most prestigious universities in Taiwan. It is also the institution that many ambitious A-Level and IB students in the region treat as a serious alternative to universities in the UK, the US and Australia: research strength that ranks inside the global top 100, a growing number of fully English-taught programmes, and tuition fees that are a fraction of Western prices.

2. Historical Origins: From 1928 to Today |
NTU was not created from nothing after the Second World War; its roots go back to the colonial period. Its predecessor was founded in 1928 during the period of Japanese rule, established by the Governor-General's Office as the highest institution of higher learning on the island and as a vehicle for training local talent. In 1945 the institution was reorganised and renamed National Taiwan University. The birth of the original university is widely regarded as a milestone in the development of higher education in Taiwan, because it introduced systematic university-level teaching and research to a region that had previously relied on sending students abroad.
That colonial origin also explains one of NTU's distinctive features: an unusually strong tradition in the natural sciences, medicine and tropical agriculture, fields that the original institution was specifically designed to study. Even today, medicine, plant science and engineering remain among the university's most internationally visible strengths.
3. Campus and Location |
The main campus sits in the heart of Taipei, in the Daan District along Roosevelt Road, with the College of Medicine and several affiliated hospitals and research units located in the Zhongzheng District nearby. Together these sites cover roughly 126 hectares, making NTU one of the largest and greenest university estates in the region. Landmarks such as the Royal Palm Boulevard, the Fu Bell and Drunken Moon Lake are part of student life and are frequently cited by exchange students as reasons for choosing the university.
Living in Taipei is another practical advantage. Public transport is dense and cheap, the city is safe at night, and the cost of living, while rising, is still substantially lower than in London, Boston or Sydney. For an A-Level student weighing up an offer from a UK university against an NTU place, the campus environment is often the factor that tips the balance.
4. Academic Structure: The Eleven Colleges |
NTU is organised into eleven colleges, under which sit a large number of departments, graduate institutes and degree programmes. The teaching and research portfolio spans the natural sciences, engineering, medicine, the social sciences and the humanities, which is why the university is able to offer genuine interdisciplinary work rather than isolated specialisms.

For applicants coming from A-Level study, the most relevant entry points are usually the College of Science, the College of Engineering, the College of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, the College of Management and the College of Social Sciences, all of which accept students with strong mathematics and science backgrounds.
5. Faculty and Teaching Resources |
As the leading university in Taiwan, NTU has assembled a large body of distinguished scholars from both the island and abroad. Many professors simultaneously hold positions at Academia Sinica, the region's foremost research institution, and a substantial number are fellows of international academies. Their work has produced important results across medicine, materials science, semiconductor physics, ecology and the humanities.
Teaching facilities are equally strong: well-equipped laboratories, a university library system holding several million printed volumes alongside extensive digital subscriptions, teaching hospitals, and high-performance computing resources. Crucially for an A-Level applicant, these resources are not reserved for postgraduates; undergraduate students, particularly in science and engineering, are routinely admitted to research groups from their second year onwards.
6. Whole-Person Education and Student Life | 全人教育与校园生活
NTU describes its educational aim as whole-person education. In practice this means students are expected to take general education courses outside their major, join student societies, and develop practical, hands-on skills rather than purely examination-based knowledge. Innovation, entrepreneurship and problem-solving are explicitly encouraged, and the university runs numerous competitions, maker spaces and start-up support schemes.
Campus life is correspondingly rich: hundreds of student clubs covering sport, music, debate, volunteer work and academic societies; an active student association; and a calendar of lectures and cultural events open to the whole city. For international students, buddy programmes and Chinese-language courses help ease the transition, and English-taught courses make it possible to complete a degree with limited Mandarin.
7. Research and Academic Collaboration |
Research at NTU is both broad and deep. The university operates major research centres in semiconductor technology, biomedical science, artificial intelligence, sustainable agriculture and climate studies, and it is a key partner in the industrial ecosystem that surrounds Taipei. Because the region hosts a globally important semiconductor industry, engineering and materials students frequently find internships and collaborative projects with real industrial impact.
Academic exchange is actively promoted. NTU has deep partnerships with many leading universities and research institutes locally and overseas, including joint research programmes, dual-degree arrangements and visiting-scholar schemes. These collaborations feed directly into undergraduate life through exchange places and international summer research programmes.
8. Social Service and Cultural Preservation |
Beyond teaching and research, NTU invests heavily in social service and cultural preservation. Students are encouraged to take part in social practice and volunteering, from rural education projects to public health outreach, and the university treats this as a way of deepening social responsibility and civic awareness rather than an optional extra.
On the cultural side, the university has built a strong reputation for research into and protection of local heritage, including work in archaeology, anthropology, indigenous studies, Taiwanese literature and history, and the digitisation of archives. University museums and collections preserve artefacts that would otherwise be at risk, and academic staff are regularly consulted on conservation policy.
9. International Reputation and Alumni |
NTU enjoys a strong reputation well beyond Taiwan. It maintains partnerships with many leading universities worldwide, offering exchange agreements, summer schools and joint degrees that open genuinely international pathways for its students. Its research output is regularly cited across disciplines, and its graduates are recognised by overseas graduate schools as well prepared for advanced study.
The alumni network is one of the university's greatest assets. Former students hold senior positions in government bodies, in industry and in every sector of society, both locally and internationally. Among the best-known examples is Yuan Tseh Lee, who graduated from NTU and later won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1986, and numerous leaders in politics, business, law and medicine also count themselves as Taida graduates.
10. Admissions: What A-Level Students Should Know | 入学申请:A-Level 学生须知
International applicants do not apply through the same domestic channel as local high-school students. There are two main routes, and choosing the right one matters far more than most applicants expect.
| Route 路径 | Who it suits 适用对象 | Key materials 关键材料 |
| Overseas joint admissions / 海外联合招生 | Students educated overseas, including many with local heritage / 在海外就读者,含许多具本地背景的学生 | Public examination results, application form, references / 公开考试成绩、申请表、推荐信 |
As a rule of thumb, competitive departments expect at least three strong A-Level subjects, with A or A* grades in the subjects most relevant to the intended major - mathematics and physics for engineering, chemistry and biology for medicine, mathematics for economics and management. Popular departments are considerably more selective, and some require an interview or a written test. English requirements are usually met with IELTS or TOEFL scores, though students who have studied in English-medium schools may be exempted.
Crucially, deadlines fall far earlier than in the UK system, and applications are handled department by department. It is therefore advisable to check the specific requirements of each department and to prepare certified transcripts and examination certificates well in advance.
11. Conclusion: Why NTU Still Matters | 结语:NTU 为何依然重要
