1. Camera Techniques |

Shot types describe how much of the subject or scene is visible in the frame. A close-up (CU) focuses tightly on a character’s face or an object, conveying intense emotion or highlighting a significant detail. An extreme close-up (ECU) zooms even further, perhaps showing only the eyes, to create a sense of unease or extreme intimacy. A medium shot (MS) frames the subject from the waist up, balancing character expression and some background context, while a long shot (LS) shows the full figure and more of the setting, often used to establish location. An establishing shot is typically a wide-angle view that introduces the environment before the action begins.

Camera movements add dynamism and meaning. A pan rotates the camera horizontally from a fixed position, following movement or scanning a scene. A tilt moves the camera vertically, often used to reveal scale or power. A tracking shot (or dolly shot) physically moves the camera alongside the subject, creating a smooth, immersive effect. A zoom changes the focal length of the lens to make the subject appear closer or further away without moving the camera, often used to emphasise a character’s sudden realisation. An aerial shot is taken from above, typically with a drone or crane, suggesting a godlike perspective or vastness.

Camera angles influence how the audience perceives characters. A low-angle shot looks up at the subject, making it appear powerful, dominant or threatening. A high-angle shot looks down, making the subject seem vulnerable, weak or insignificant. A Dutch angle (or canted angle) tilts the horizon, creating disorientation, tension or a sense that something is wrong. Point-of-view (POV) shots show what a character sees, encouraging the audience to identify with that character’s experience.

2. Editing |

Editing structures time, space and narrative rhythm. Continuity editing is the dominant style that seeks to make cuts invisible, maintaining a seamless flow of action. The 180-degree rule is a fundamental principle: the camera should stay on one side of an imaginary line connecting two characters to keep spatial relationships consistent. A shot/reverse-shot sequence alternates between two characters, usually during a conversation, reinforcing the sense of eyeline matching. Cross-cutting (or parallel editing) cuts between two or more separate scenes happening simultaneously, building suspense or drawing thematic comparisons. A match on action cuts from one shot to another while the same action continues, smoothing the transition.

A jump cut deliberately breaks continuity by cutting between two shots of the same subject with little or no change in camera position, making time seem to jump forward. This technique is associated with French New Wave cinema and modern vlog editing. A montage is a series of short shots edited together to condense time, convey information rapidly or create an emotional impact. The Kuleshov effect refers to the way viewers derive more meaning from the juxtaposition of two sequential shots than from a single shot in isolation. A cross dissolve or fade indicates a passage of time; a fade to black often signals the end of a sequence or a major shift in narrative mood.

Pace and rhythm are controlled by shot duration: rapid cutting intensifies action and excitement, while long takes (sustained shots without cuts) build tension, realism or allow the viewer to observe a scene more deeply. Slow motion stretches a moment to emphasise its emotional or dramatic weight; time-lapse compresses long periods into seconds, often showing processes like city traffic or a blooming flower.

3. Sound |

Sound in media is split into diegetic and non-diegetic categories. Diegetic sound originates from within the story world: dialogue spoken by characters, footsteps, a radio playing, traffic noise. Non-diegetic sound comes from outside the story world, added for the audience’s benefit: a musical score, a voice-over narrator, exaggerated sound effects for comedic or dramatic effect. Sound bridges occur when sound from one scene continues into or bleeds over the next, smoothing transitions and linking narrative threads.

Common audio techniques include incidental music, which is background music that sets mood and builds tension without drawing attention to itself. A leitmotif is a recurring musical theme associated with a specific character, place, or idea. Sound effects (SFX) can be synchronous (matched to on-screen action, like a punch sound) or asynchronous (heard without seeing the source, creating off-screen space). Ambient sound provides background atmosphere, such as birdsong in a forest or the hum of a spaceship, contributing to the verisimilitude of the diegetic world. Contrapuntal sound deliberately contrasts with the visuals, such as cheerful music over a violent scene, creating ironic or unsettling effects.

4. Mise-en-scène |

Mise-en-scène is a French term that means ‘putting on stage’ and refers to everything placed in front of the camera. Setting includes locations, props and backdrops, which can signal genre, historical era, social status or symbolic meaning. Lighting shapes the mood: high-key lighting is bright, even and low-contrast, typical of comedies and sitcoms; low-key lighting creates deep shadows and high contrast, common in film noir, horror and thrillers to generate mystery and anxiety. Three-point lighting uses key light, fill light and back light to create a natural, modelled look. Coloured gels or lighting can imply psychological states—blue for coldness or sadness, red for danger or passion.

Costume, hair and make-up instantly communicate character traits: period, profession, subculture, transformation. A character’s clothing can signal their rebellion, conformity, wealth or poverty. Performance and blocking refer to actors’ expressions, gestures, posture and movement relative to the camera and each other. Proxemics—the distance between characters—can reveal relationships and power dynamics. Colour palette is the deliberate choice of colours across costumes, sets and lighting to create visual coherence or thematic contrast. A desaturated palette might suggest bleakness, while vibrant colours suggest energy or fantasy.

5. Narrative Theory |

Narrative refers to the structure and organisation of a story. Todorov’s narrative theory suggests most stories follow a pattern: equilibrium (stable beginning), disruption (something disturbs the order), recognition of disruption, attempt to repair, and a new equilibrium. Propp’s character types identify recurring roles in folk tales: hero, villain, donor, helper, princess, dispatcher, false hero. These functions can be applied to modern media to analyse character archetypes. Barthes’ codes propose that narratives are woven from five codes: the hermeneutic code (mystery and enigma), the proairetic code (action and suspense), the semantic code (connotations), the symbolic code (binary oppositions) and the cultural code (references to shared knowledge).

Linear narratives unfold chronologically, while non-linear narratives use flashbacks, flash-forwards, or fragmented timelines (e.g. Pulp Fiction). An open ending leaves questions unresolved; a closed ending wraps up all storylines. Restricted narration limits the audience’s knowledge to what a single character knows, building mystery; omniscient narration provides a godlike overview, moving between characters and places. Enigma codes are puzzles posed by the narrative that keep the audience engaged, slowly revealing answers. The cliffhanger is a device that ends an episode or chapter at a moment of high suspense, compelling the audience to return.

6. Audience Theories |

Understanding the audience is central to media studies. The hypodermic syringe model (also called the magic bullet theory) suggests media injects ideas directly into a passive audience, influencing behaviour and beliefs in a uniform way. This model is now considered too simplistic. The two-step flow theory proposes that media messages first reach opinion leaders, who then interpret and pass them on to less active members of the audience, acknowledging that social factors mediate media influence.

Uses and gratifications shifts the focus to what people do with media. The main gratifications are: information, personal identity (reinforcing values or finding role models), integration and social interaction (connecting with others), and entertainment (escape, relaxation). Reception theory by Stuart Hall argues that meaning is created through audience interpretation. Texts can be read from a dominant (preferred) reading (accepting the intended meaning), a negotiated reading (partly accepting, partly modifying), or an oppositional reading (rejecting the intended meaning based on alternative values).

Cultivation theory suggests that heavy television viewers gradually adopt a view of the world closer to that portrayed on TV, blurring the line between mediated reality and actual reality. Moral panic (Stanley Cohen) describes how media can amplify a perceived threat, creating public anxiety and calls for control. The active audience concept sees viewers as selective interpreters and participants rather than passive consumers. These theories help you analyse how a specific media product might target, construct and affect its audience.

7. Representation |

Representation is how media re-presents reality. It involves selection, construction and mediation: choices about what to include, how to portray it and through whose perspective. Stereotypes are simplified, often exaggerated, representations of a social group, instantly recognisable but potentially harmful. A countertype challenges dominant stereotypes by presenting a character who breaks the expected mould. Binary oppositions (Lévi-Strauss) structure meaning through contrast: good vs evil, civilisation vs wilderness, male vs female, young vs old.

Key concepts include the male gaze (Laura Mulvey), which argues that visual media often objectifies women from a heterosexual male perspective, positioning the female body as a spectacle to be looked at. The female gaze or oppositional gaze reframes the point of identification. Tokenism is the superficial inclusion of minority characters to give an appearance of diversity without meaningful development. Ethnicity and race representations can rely on othering—portraying groups as different, exotic, or inferior relative to a normative white centre. Disability representation often falls into tropes: the inspirational supercrip, the villain, the object of pity. Media analysis must question who is represented, how, and for what purpose.

8. Media Industries and Regulation |

The SQA course expects you to understand how media products are shaped by industry contexts. Conglomeration refers to large corporations owning multiple subsidiary companies across different media sectors (e.g., Disney owning film studios, TV networks, and streaming platforms). Vertical integration is when a company controls multiple stages of production, distribution and exhibition; horizontal integration involves acquiring competitors or expanding across different media products to dominate a market. Synergy is the coordinated promotion and release of a media product across various platforms and merchandise to maximise profit. Public service broadcasting (PSB) differs from commercial media: PSB aims to inform, educate and entertain without needing to chase profit, funded by licence fees (e.g., BBC).

Regulation involves bodies that enforce standards. In the UK, Ofcom regulates TV, radio and video-on-demand, enforcing rules on harm, offence, accuracy and impartiality. The BBFC classifies films in cinemas and physical media according to age ratings based on content about violence, sex, language and drug use. IPSO handles complaints about newspapers and magazines. PEGI rates video games. These regulators balance freedom of expression with protection from harm. The watershed (9pm on UK TV) restricts content unsuitable for children before that time. Debates around censorship versus classification consider whether media content should be banned or simply labelled and restricted.

9. New Media and Digital Convergence |

Digital convergence is the merging of previously separate technologies, industries and platforms. A smartphone combines a phone, camera, music player, web browser, and gaming device. Technological convergence enables content to flow across devices; industrial convergence sees partnerships between tech companies, telecoms and content creators. Cultural convergence (Jenkins) refers to how audiences actively participate, sharing and remixing content across communities. Transmedia storytelling spreads a narrative across multiple platforms, each making a unique contribution to the story world (e.g., Marvel films, comics, and series).

Web 2.0 refers to the shift from static web pages to user-generated content, interactivity, and social networking. Prosumer (producer-consumer) describes audiences who both consume and produce media, breaking down the traditional divide. Viral marketing relies on users sharing content rapidly, often through social media. Algorithmic curation shapes what we see on platforms like TikTok and YouTube, raising issues of echo chambers and filter bubbles. Citizen journalism sees ordinary people reporting news via smartphones and social media, challenging professional gatekeeping but raising questions of verification.

10. Genre and Intertextuality |

Genre categorises media texts by shared conventions and codes. Audiences develop expectations about narrative, style, setting and iconography. Genre hybridity blends conventions from two or more genres (e.g., romantic comedy, sci-fi horror). Sub-genres are more specific categories within a broader genre (e.g., slasher within horror). Generic conventions include recurring elements such as the lone detective in noir, the jump scare in horror, or the meet-cute in romantic comedy. Iconography is the visual or sound shorthand that signifies genre: dusty saloon doors for westerns, neon lights for cyberpunk, a theremin sound for sci-fi. Genre is not fixed but evolves, reflecting cultural changes.

Intertextuality describes the relationship between texts: all media texts reference, borrow from or transform earlier texts. A pastiche imitates with affectionate or respectful intent; a parody mocks for comic or critical effect. Homage pays tribute to an earlier work or director. Allusion is an indirect reference that relies on audience knowledge to generate meaning. Bricolage assembles elements from different sources into a new creation, common in postmodern media. Recognising intertextuality deepens analysis—you can ask how a text positions the audience by drawing on shared cultural knowledge.

11. Ideology and Hegemony |

Ideology is a system of beliefs, values and ideas that shapes how the world is understood. Media texts often transmit dominant ideologies about gender roles, consumerism, individualism or success. Hegemony (Gramsci) explains how power is maintained not only through force but by winning consent, so that dominant values appear natural and common sense. Media plays a key role in maintaining hegemonic beliefs—for instance, by repeatedly presenting the nuclear family as the ideal or by linking happiness to purchasing products.

Counter-hegemonic texts challenge dominant narratives, offering alternative perspectives on social issues. Documentaries, independent films and alternative news platforms can present oppositional viewpoints. The culture industry (Adorno and Horkheimer) suggests that mass-produced media leads to passive consumption and standardised culture. Encoding/decoding recognises that producers encode preferred meanings, but audiences decode according to their social position. Postmodernism questions grand narratives and absolute truths, favouring fragmentation, playfulness and self-reflexivity, often blurring the distinction between reality and representation.

12. Applying Vocabulary in Exam Responses |

Simply listing terms does not earn high marks; you must use them to support analysis. When analysing a moving image extract, identify specific techniques using precise vocabulary, then explain the effect on the audience. For instance: 'The low-angle close-up of the villain, combined with low-key lighting casting harsh shadows across his face, constructs him as menacing and dominant, positioning the audience to feel intimidated.' Link techniques to representation, narrative and audience theories. In longer essays, compare how a product uses conventions, subverts them, or targets a specific demographic through its construction. Always use the PEEL structure: Point, Evidence (the term and where it appears), Explanation (intended effect), Link (to context, theory or other texts).

For representation questions, interrogate who created the text, what choices were made, and how audiences might interpret it differently. Use media language to discuss stereotypes, binary oppositions, and ideology. For audience questions, apply uses and gratifications or reception theory to show how different viewers might engage. In industry questions, demonstrate understanding of production, distribution, and regulation dynamics. The more seamlessly you integrate terminology, the more convincing your argument. Remember: terminology is a tool, not an end in itself. Effective analysis explains how and why media language creates meaning, not merely labelling it.
