📚 Year 12 CIE Music: Case Study Practical Exercises | CIE Year 12 音乐:案例分析实战演练
Mastering case studies is a vital skill for Year 12 CIE Music students. In the AS Level examination, you are required to analyse unfamiliar music, apply your knowledge of set works, and write clear, structured essays. This article provides practical exercises and frameworks to help you dissect any musical excerpt, from a Classical symphony to a contemporary pop track, and articulate your observations with academic precision.
1. Why Case Studies Matter in CIE AS Music | 为什么案例分析在 CIE AS 音乐中至关重要
Case study work sits at the centre of the Listening paper. Whether you are given a Baroque binary-form movement, a Romantic piano miniature, a jazz standard or a piece from a world music tradition, the examiner is testing the same three things: what you can hear, what you can name, and what you can explain. A candidate who simply writes 'it is loud and fast' scores far less than one who writes 'the fortissimo tutti in the strings drives a driving alla breve pulse, giving the passage an urgent, dramatic character typical of late Romantic orchestral writing'.
The practical aim is therefore not to memorise more facts, but to convert listening into vocabulary and vocabulary into argument. Case study practice trains you to do that conversion in real time, under exam pressure, with a pencil in your hand.
2. The Syllabus Map: Where Case Studies Appear |
In CIE AS and A Level Music, the Listening component combines two strands: questions on your prescribed set works, and questions on unfamiliar music. The unfamiliar extracts are the true 'case studies' - short pieces you have never seen, presented either as a score excerpt, a recording, or both. Always download the current syllabus for your examination year, because the set work list and the areas of study are reviewed periodically.
The assessment objectives you are effectively satisfying are consistent across the paper:
- AO1 Knowledge and understanding - naming features accurately. |
- AO2 Application - using that knowledge on music you have not studied. |
- AO3 Analysis and evaluation - explaining why a feature matters. |
- AO4 Communication - structured, precise, well-spelled writing. |
A high-band answer shows all four in every paragraph. A weak answer stops at AO1 and never reaches AO3.
3. The Seven-Element Listening Framework |
Every case study can be unpacked through seven musical elements. Learn them in this order and use them as your mental checklist when the recording starts.
| Element | 要素 | What to listen for | 聆听要点 | Useful vocabulary | 可用术语 |
| Rhythm and metre 节奏与拍子 | pulse, syncopation, cross-rhythm, tempo changes | 律动、切分、交错节奏、速度变化 | simple quadruple, compound duple, rubato, ostinato |
| Instrumentation and timbre 配器与音色 | families, playing techniques, electronic sound | 乐器组、演奏法、电子音响 | pizzicato, con sordino, flutter-tonguing, synth pad |
| Structure and context 结构与语境 | form, sections, historical and social background | 曲式、段落、历史与社会背景 | binary, sonata form, strophic, verse-chorus |
A common error is to treat these seven boxes as a list to be ticked off in order. They are not a template for the answer; they are a grid for your notes. In the essay itself you should group them into two or three flowing arguments.
4. Exercise 1: First Hearing and Contextual Clues |
Before you analyse a single chord, spend the first thirty seconds establishing context. Listen for the sound world: is this an acoustic ensemble, an amplified band, a solo instrument with electronics? The timbre alone often tells you the approximate date and tradition. A harpsichord with no dynamic shading suggests the Baroque; a large orchestra with heavy brass and cymbals suggests the Romantic or film-score world; a drum machine and looped sample suggests popular music after 1980.
Use the three-pass method below in every practice session. It mirrors what you should do in the exam, where you often hear an extract two or three times.
| 2nd 第二遍 | Sections, cadences, texture changes | 段落、终止式、织体变化 | A skeleton timeline with timings | 带时间点的结构骨架 |
| 3rd 第三遍 | Detail for your argument | 支撑论点的细节 | Named features plus bar references | 特征名称加小节/时间参照 |
Contextual clues also come from the question paper itself. The phrasing of the prompt - 'discuss the composer's use of texture' versus 'compare the two extracts' - tells you which elements to prioritise when you run out of time.
5. Exercise 2: Melody, Tonality and Motif |
Start melodic analysis with contour. Hum the opening phrase and trace its shape: does it rise to a peak and fall away, or stay in a narrow range? Then quantify it. Identify the interval that opens the melody - a rising perfect 4th, a falling minor 3rd - because that interval is often the seed from which the whole piece grows.
Next, look for devices that reveal compositional intent:
- Sequence - a motif repeated at a higher or lower pitch. |
- Imitation - the same idea passed between parts or instruments. |
- Inversion - the shape turned upside down.
- Augmentation and diminution - the motif stretched or compressed in note values. |
- Ornamentation - trills, mordents, turns and appoggiaturas decorating a structural line. |
For tonality, establish the key centre first and then track where it moves. A modulation to the dominant or relative major is standard practice in Classical and popular music alike; a sudden move to the flattened submediant (for example, C major to A♭ major) is a hallmark of Romantic and film scoring. Use a simple framework to be precise:
Key centre → Point of modulation → New key → Effect on mood
Practise with the opening eight bars of any piece: name the key, name the cadence, name the device, and then write one sentence explaining why the composer chose it. That sentence is exactly what the examiner rewards.
6. Exercise 3: Harmony, Rhythm, Metre and Texture |
Harmonic analysis is fastest when you work from cadences outwards. Locate the points where the music pauses or settles, and label the cadence type. Cadences reveal phrase structure, and phrase structure reveals form.
V → I = perfect cadence | IV → I = plagal | V → vi = interrupted | ii → V = imperfect close
V → I 完全终止 | IV → I 变格终止 | V → vi 阻碍终止 | ii → V 半终止
Beyond cadences, describe the harmonic language: triadic and diatonic, or extended and chromatic? Chords such as C⁷, A♭maj⁷, suspended 4ths, added-note chords and quartal stacks all need naming, and modern popular music rewards you for spotting them.
Rhythm and metre questions usually ask about pulse and disruption. Identify the time signature by conducting along, then note the following:
- Whether the metre is simple or compound: 4/4 versus 6/8. |
- Syncopation and off-beat accents, common in jazz, funk and Latin styles. |
- Cross-rhythms and polyrhythm, for example 3 against 2.
- Hemiola, where the grouping shifts within a steady metre. |
- Tempo changes: accelerando, rallentando, rubato. |
Texture is the element students neglect most. Name it precisely: monophonic, homophonic with melody and accompaniment, polyphonic or contrapuntal, antiphonal, heterophonic. Then describe how it changes. A single sentence such as 'the texture thins from full tutti to a solo clarinet over sustained strings, creating a moment of stillness before the recapitulation' earns more than three vague adjectives.
7. Exercise 4: Instrumentation, Timbre, Dynamics and Articulation |
Instrumentation questions reward specific technical language. Learn the standard performance techniques for each family and be ready to hear them.
Dynamics must be described as a process, not a state. Instead of 'it is loud', write 'a terraced crescendo across three phrases, moving from p to f and underlining the structural climax'. Articulation and phrasing vocabulary - staccato, legato, marcato, accents, sforzando, portamento - adds the same precision to the small scale.
8. Exercise 5: Structure, Form and Historical Context |
Structural questions ask you to divide the music into sections and justify the division. Always justify by evidence: a cadence, a texture change, a return of the opening theme, a change of key, or a clear break in the recording.
| Binary 二部曲式 | A → B with a tonal move and a return | A → B,含调性离开与回归 |
| Ternary 三部曲式 | A → B → A with a literal or varied return | A → B → A,再现原样或变化 |
| Rondo 回旋曲式 | A → B → A → C → A, rondo refrain | A → B → A → C → A,有回旋主部 |
| Strophic 分节歌 | Same music, new words each verse | 同一音乐,每段歌词不同 |
| Verse-chorus 主副歌 | Alternating sections with a repeated hook | 段落交替,副歌重复抓耳动机 |
| Twelve-bar blues 十二小节布鲁斯 | I → I → I → I → IV → IV → I → I → V → IV → I → V | 和弦进行固定为 12 小节 |
Context marks are easy marks, but only if they are tied to the music. Write 'the use of a walking bass and swung quavers places this extract in the post-1945 jazz tradition, and the chromatic ii - V - I turnaround confirms a bebop harmonic language', not 'this is jazz from America'.
