1. Skeletal System: Joint Classification and Movement |
A common question in CCEA unit tests asks students to identify a synovial joint from a diagram and describe the movements it allows. For example: "Identify the type of synovial joint at the knee and explain how its structure allows movement." The expected answer is a hinge joint, which permits flexion and extension only. Many students write "ball and socket" because they confuse the knee with the hip. Remember that hinge joints have strong collateral ligaments that restrict lateral movement, making them stable for actions such as running and jumping.
Another typical task involves linking a sporting action to joint movement. Take a sprinter driving out of the blocks: the hip undergoes extension as the leg straightens behind the body. Always use precise anatomical terms - "straightening" is not specific enough; write "extension at the hip joint". Marks are awarded for the correct joint plus the correct movement, so both parts must appear in your answer.
|---|---|---|
| Hinge (knee, elbow) 铰链(膝、肘) | Flexion, extension 屈、伸 | Knee lift in sprinting; biceps curl 短跑抬腿;弯举 |
| Ball and socket (hip, shoulder)
| Pivot (atlas and axis) 车轴(寰椎与枢椎) | Rotation 旋转 | Turning the head to breathe in front crawl 自由泳转头换气 |
| Gliding (carpals, tarsals) 平面(腕骨、跗骨) | Sliding, gliding 滑动 | Wrist action in a racket stroke 挥拍时的手腕动作 |
2. Muscular System: Antagonistic Pairs and Muscle Fibres |
Questions on antagonistic muscle action require four correct labels: agonist (prime mover), antagonist, synergist and fixator. During elbow flexion, the biceps brachii is the agonist and contracts concentrically, the triceps brachii is the antagonist and relaxes, while the shoulder muscles act as fixators to stabilise the joint. A very common error is writing that "the antagonist contracts" - it does not; it lengthens under control to allow the movement.
You should also be able to compare muscle contraction types and fibre types. Isotonic contractions produce movement - concentric shortening during the upward phase of a squat, eccentric lengthening during the downward phase - while isometric contractions produce no movement but maintain posture, such as holding a plank. Slow twitch (type I) fibres suit long-distance events because they have many mitochondria and a rich blood supply; fast twitch (type II) fibres produce greater force for sprinting and jumping but fatigue quickly.
3. Cardiovascular System: Heart, Vessels and Cardiac Output |
The heart is a double pump: the right side sends deoxygenated blood to the lungs through the pulmonary circuit, and the left side sends oxygenated blood around the body through the systemic circuit. The septum separates the two sides so that oxygenated and deoxygenated blood do not mix, and valves prevent backflow. Examiners often ask why the left ventricle wall is thicker - the answer is that it must generate higher pressure to push blood around the whole body.
During exercise, the vascular shunt mechanism redistributes blood: arterioles supplying working muscles vasodilate, while those supplying the digestive system vasoconstrict. This increases cardiac output, which is defined by a formula you should be able to use and rearrange.
Cardiac Output (Q) = Heart Rate (HR) × Stroke Volume (SV)
4. Respiratory System: Mechanics and Gaseous Exchange |
Inspiration is an active process: the diaphragm contracts and flattens, the external intercostals contract and lift the ribs up and out, the volume of the thoracic cavity increases and the pressure inside falls below atmospheric pressure, so air rushes in. Expiration at rest is largely passive - the diaphragm and intercostals relax, volume decreases and pressure rises. A frequent mistake is to describe the diaphragm as "moving down" without stating that it contracts, or to claim that the ribs move down during inspiration.
Gaseous exchange at the alveoli occurs by diffusion because the partial pressure of oxygen is higher in the alveoli than in the blood, and the partial pressure of carbon dioxide is higher in the blood than in the alveoli. The alveoli are efficient because they have a large surface area, walls one cell thick, a rich capillary network and a moist lining. You should also be able to calculate minute ventilation.
Minute Ventilation (VE) = Tidal Volume (TV) × Breathing Rate (BR)
5. Aerobic and Anaerobic Energy Systems |
Aerobic respiration occurs with oxygen and releases energy gradually, so it suits long-duration, low-to-moderate-intensity work such as a marathon or a 1500 m swim. Anaerobic respiration occurs without oxygen and releases energy very quickly, so it suits short, high-intensity efforts such as a 100 m sprint or a rugby scrum, but it produces lactic acid as a by-product.
glucose + oxygen → carbon dioxide + water + energy
glucose → lactic acid + energy (anaerobic)
When lactic acid accumulates faster than it can be removed, muscle fatigue and a drop in performance follow. The oxygen debt (excess post-exercise oxygen consumption) is repaid after exercise through continued deep breathing and an elevated heart rate, which delivers oxygen to oxidise the lactic acid or convert it back to glycogen in the liver. A structured cool down speeds up this process and reduces the risk of blood pooling and delayed onset muscle soreness.
6. Components of Fitness and Fitness Testing |
Health-related components of fitness are cardiovascular endurance, muscular endurance, muscular strength, flexibility and body composition. Skill-related components are speed, agility, balance, coordination, power and reaction time. A question may ask you to justify which component is most important for a named performer - always name the sport and position, then explain the demand that makes that component essential.
Practical questions often require you to select an appropriate test. The multi-stage fitness test or Cooper 12-minute run estimates cardiovascular endurance; the sit and reach test measures flexibility; a hand grip dynamometer measures muscular strength; the Illinois agility run measures agility; a vertical jump measures power; and the ruler drop test measures reaction time. When evaluating a test, comment on validity (does it measure what it claims?) and reliability (would a repeat give the same result?), and remember that results should be compared with normative data for the performer's age and gender rather than in isolation.
7. Principles and Methods of Training |
All training programmes are built on the principles summarised by SPORT: Specificity, Progressive Overload, Reversibility and Tedium (variety). The FITT principle then tells you how to apply overload - Frequency, Intensity, Time and Type. Without progressive overload the body adapts and plateaus; without specificity a marathon runner who only lifts weights will not improve their race time.
You should be able to match a method to a goal: continuous training for cardiovascular endurance, interval training for anaerobic power, fartlek for varied pace work, circuit training for combined strength and endurance, weight training for strength and power, and plyometrics for explosive power. Training thresholds matter too - working at 60-80% of maximum heart rate improves aerobic fitness, while 80-90% develops anaerobic fitness. Maximum heart rate is estimated as follows.
Maximum Heart Rate = 220 − age
8. Sports Psychology: Motivation, Arousal and Anxiety |
Motivation may be intrinsic (playing for enjoyment, personal satisfaction or pride) or extrinsic (playing for trophies, money, praise or selection). Intrinsic motivation usually lasts longer, but extrinsic rewards are useful for beginners. In a longer answer, explain the effect on performance and give a specific sporting example - for instance, a young gymnast who trains because she loves the feeling of mastering a new routine is intrinsically motivated.
Arousal is the level of mental and physical readiness. According to the inverted-U theory, performance improves as arousal rises to an optimum point and then declines if arousal continues to increase. The optimum level depends on the task and the performer: fine, complex skills such as putting in golf need lower arousal, while gross, simple skills such as a rugby tackle tolerate higher arousal; elite performers cope with higher arousal than novices.
Anxiety is a negative emotional state associated with worry and apprehension. State anxiety is temporary and situation-specific, whereas trait anxiety is a stable part of personality. Cognitive anxiety shows as worrying thoughts and loss of concentration; somatic anxiety shows as sweating, a racing heart and tense muscles. Techniques such as visualisation, positive self-talk, mental rehearsal and controlled breathing help performers regulate arousal and anxiety before competition.
9. Feedback, Guidance and Goal Setting |
Feedback can be positive (praising what was done well) or negative (pointing out what must improve); it can also be internal (kinaesthetic feel) or external (from a coach, video or spectator). Knowledge of results tells the
