1. Skeletal System and Joint Actions |
The skeleton performs five key functions that underpin every sporting action: support, because the framework of bones holds the body upright; protection, because the cranium shields the brain and the ribs and sternum shield the heart and lungs; movement, because bones act as levers that muscles pull on; mineral storage, mainly calcium and phosphorus; and blood cell production, since red and white blood cells are manufactured in bone marrow.
Bones meet at joints, which are classified as fibrous, cartilaginous or synovial. Fibrous joints are fixed and immovable, such as the sutures of the skull. Cartilaginous joints are slightly movable, such as the joints between the vertebrae, where cartilage acts as a shock absorber. Synovial joints are freely movable and are the most important joint type in sport because they allow a wide range of movement.
A synovial joint contains several key structures. Articular (hyaline) cartilage covers the ends of the bones to reduce friction and absorb shock. The synovial membrane secretes synovial fluid, which lubricates the joint and nourishes the cartilage. The joint capsule surrounds the joint and holds the bones together. Ligaments connect bone to bone and provide stability, while tendons connect muscle to bone and transmit force. Bursae are small fluid-filled sacs that reduce friction where tendons pass over bone.
The main synovial joint types are hinge joints (elbow, knee, ankle), which allow flexion and extension; ball-and-socket joints (shoulder, hip), which allow movement in all three planes; pivot joints (atlas and axis in the neck), which allow rotation; gliding joints (carpals, tarsals), which allow sliding movements; saddle joints (base of the thumb); and condyloid joints (wrist).

Joint movements you must be able to name and apply are flexion (decreasing the angle at a joint, as in the knee during the recovery phase of a sprint), extension (increasing the angle, as in the drive phase at the knee), abduction (moving a limb away from the midline, as in raising the arm sideways), adduction (moving it back towards the midline), rotation (turning a bone around its own axis), circumduction (a full cone-shaped circle, as in a cricket bowling action), plantarflexion (pointing the toes, as at take-off in a jump) and dorsiflexion (pulling the toes up, as when preparing to land).
2. Muscular System and Muscle Contraction |
Muscles work in antagonistic pairs. The agonist, or prime mover, contracts to produce movement while the antagonist relaxes and lengthens to allow it. At the elbow, the biceps brachii flexes the arm while the triceps brachii extends it. At the knee, the quadriceps extend and the hamstrings flex. At the ankle, the gastrocnemius plantarflexes while the tibialis anterior dorsiflexes.
There are three types of muscle tissue. Skeletal muscle is striated and under voluntary control, and it produces movement and posture. Smooth muscle is found in the walls of internal organs such as the stomach and blood vessels and works involuntarily. Cardiac muscle is found only in the heart wall, is involuntary and is highly fatigue-resistant because it must beat continuously for life.
Muscular contraction can be isotonic or isometric. Isotonic contraction involves a change in muscle length: concentric contraction shortens the muscle, as the biceps do during the upward phase of a bicep curl, while eccentric contraction lengthens the muscle under tension, as the biceps do when lowering the weight slowly. Isometric contraction occurs when the muscle generates tension but its length does not change, for example holding a plank or a wall sit.
Muscle fibres differ in their contractile and metabolic properties. Type I slow-twitch fibres have a rich blood supply and many mitochondria, contract slowly and resist fatigue, making them suited to endurance events such as marathon running and to postural work. Type IIa fast oxidative glycolytic fibres are moderately fast and moderately fatigue-resistant, suiting middle-distance events such as 800 m. Type IIx fast glycolytic fibres contract very quickly and powerfully but fatigue rapidly, suiting sprinting, jumping and throwing.

3. Respiratory System and Gaseous Exchange |
Inhalation is an active process. The diaphragm contracts and flattens, the external intercostal muscles contract to lift the ribs up and out, the volume of the thoracic cavity increases and the pressure inside the lungs falls below atmospheric pressure, so air is drawn in. At rest, exhalation is largely passive: the diaphragm relaxes and moves upwards, the ribs move down and in, thoracic volume decreases, pressure rises above atmospheric pressure and air is forced out.
Lung volumes and capacities are important examination content. Tidal volume is the amount of air breathed in or out in one breath at rest, about 500 ml. Inspiratory and expiratory reserve volumes are the extra amounts that can be breathed in or out beyond a normal breath. Vital capacity is the largest volume that can be exhaled after a maximum inhalation. Residual volume, roughly 1 200 ml, is the air that always remains in the lungs and cannot be exhaled.
Minute ventilation (L·min⁻¹) = tidal volume (L) × breathing rate (breaths·min⁻¹)
At rest, minute ventilation is around 6 litres per minute; during maximal exercise it can exceed 100 litres per minute because both tidal volume and breathing rate increase. Gaseous exchange takes place at the alveoli. Oxygen diffuses from the alveolar air into the blood in the surrounding capillaries, where the partial pressure of
