📚 Year 11 Eduqas Accounting: Common Misconceptions and Correction Methods | 11年级Eduqas会计:常见误区与纠正方法
Accounting at Year 11 under the Eduqas specification challenges students to apply principles, maintain accurate records and produce meaningful financial statements. However, many learners develop persistent misconceptions that cost them marks in both structured tasks and multiple-choice tests. This article identifies the most common areas of confusion – ranging from capital and revenue expenditure to control accounts and accounting concepts – and provides clear corrections with worked examples, adjusting entries and explanatory tables. By working through these misconceptions methodically, you will build the precision and confidence needed for exam success.
1. Capital vs Revenue Expenditure |
A common mistake is treating a significant improvement as a revenue expense or, conversely, capitalising a routine repair. For example, replacing an entire engine in a delivery van extends its useful life and enhances its capacity – this is capital expenditure, not a repair cost. The incorrect treatment of revenue expenditure as capital overstates non-current assets and profits in the short term, while capitalising revenue costs understates expenses and overstates equity.
To decide correctly, ask: does the expense generate future economic benefits beyond the current period? If yes, debit the non-current asset account and credit cash/payables. If the expense merely maintains the asset’s existing condition, debit the relevant expense account (e.g. Repairs and maintenance).
Example: van engine replacement £4,500 → Dr Motor Vehicles, Cr Bank £4,500 (capital). Annual service £200 → Dr Vehicle running expenses, Cr Bank £200 (revenue).
2. Depreciation: Straight-line and Reducing Balance |
Students often miscalculate the depreciable amount by forgetting to deduct residual value in the straight-line method, or they apply the reducing balance percentage to the original cost every year instead of the net book value. Another frequent error is allowing the carrying amount to fall below residual value when using reducing balance.
ue) / Useful life. For reducing balance, apply the fixed percentage to the net book value at the start of each year; residual value is not deducted in the calculation but acts as a floor – depreciation should stop once the carrying amount reaches residual value.
Example: asset cost £10,000, residual value £1,000, 5-year life. Straight-line: (£10,000 − £1,000) / 5 = £1,800 per year. Reducing balance at 40%: Year 1 £10,000 × 40% = £4,000 (NBV £6,000), Year 2 £6,000 × 40% = £2,400 (NBV £3,600), continuing until NBV nears £1,000.
3. Bad Debts and Allowance for Doubtful Debts |
Misconceptions arise when writing off a bad debt directly against the allowance instead of charging it to the bad debts expense account, or when adjusting the allowance at year-end without considering the existing balance. Many students simply debit profit or loss with the required allowance figure rather than the change in allowance needed.
The correct sequence is: (1) Write off any identified bad debts: Dr Bad debts expense, Cr Trade receivables. (2) Calculate the required allowance (e.g. 5% of remaining trade receivables). (3) Compare with the existing allowance: if the required allowance is higher, increase it by debiting Bad debts expense and crediting Allowance for doubtful debts for the difference; if lower, reverse the difference.
| Transaction | Debit | Credit |
|---|---|---|
| Write off a specific bad debt of £400 | Bad debts expense £400 | Trade receivables £400 |
| Year-end allowance increase from £500 to £700 | Bad debts expense £200 | Allowance for doubtful debts £200 |
Recovery of a bad debt previously written off should be reversed: Dr Cash/Bank, Cr Bad debts recovered (income in profit or loss).
4. Inventory Valuation: FIFO, AVCO and NRV |
Students often misapply AVCO by not recalculating the weighted average cost after each new purchase, or they treat FIFO as if the latest purchases are left in closing inventory without considering the actual flow. Moreover, the lower-of-cost-and-net-realisable-value rule is frequently ignored or misapplied: NRV must be compared item by item (or in similar groups), not by the whole inventory balance.
AVCO calculation: after each purchase, divide the total cost of inventory held by the total units held. When issuing inventory, use this average cost. For FIFO, the earliest purchases are charged to cost of sales first, so closing inventory consists of the most recent purchases.
| Date | Purchases | Sales | AVCO per unit |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 Jan: 100 units at £10 | £1,000 | – | £10.00 |
| 5 Jan: 200 units at £12 | £2,400 | – | (£1,000+£2,400)/300 = £11.33 |
| 10 Jan: sale 150 units | – | 150 × £11.33 | Remaining 150 units at £11.33 |
For NRV: if an item's cost is £25 but its expected selling price is £30 with £8 selling costs, NRV = £22, which is lower than cost. Inventory must be written down to £22 per unit.
5. Accruals and Prepayments |
The most frequent error is reversing the adjusting double entry: treating an accrued expense as a prepayment and vice versa. Remember, an accrued expense increases expenses and creates a current liability; a prepaid expense reduces expenses and creates a current asset. Accrued income adds to income and creates a receivable, while prepaid income (deferred income) reduces income and creates a liability.
For example, rent of £18,000 per year paid quarterly in advance. The financial year ends after 9 months, but only £13,500 has been paid (three quarterly payments). The business has used 9 months of rent costing £13,500, so no accrual. But if the last quarter's rent of £4,500 falls due but is unpaid, then an accrual of £4,500 is needed: Dr Rent expense £4,500, Cr Accruals (liability) £4,500.
When a prepayment exists, say rent of £20,000 was paid for the year but the year-end falls after 10 months, then 2 months are prepaid: Dr Prepaid rent (asset) £3,333 and Cr Rent expense £3,333 to reduce the charge.
6. Bank Reconciliation |
The bank reconciliation statement confuses many learners because they add unpresented cheques to the bank statement balance instead of deducting them. Unpresented cheques (cheques issued but not yet cleared) have already been recorded in the cash book, so they must be subtracted from the bank statement balance to reconcile. Similarly, deposits in transit (lodgements not yet credited) should be added to the bank statement balance.
| Bank reconciliation as at 31 March 2025 | |
|---|---|
| Balance per bank statement | £2,500 |
| Add: Deposits in transit | £800 |
| Less: Unpresented cheques | (£620) |
| Balance per cash book (updated) | £2,680 |
Other items such as bank charges, direct debits and standing orders appear on the bank statement but may not yet be in the cash book. These must be entered into the cash book before preparing the reconciliation. The reconciliation then proves that all differences are due to timing.
7. Control Accounts: Sales Ledger Control |
A typical misconception is recording sales returns or discount allowed on the wrong side of the sales ledger control account. The control account is a mirror of the total entries in the sales ledger (trade receivables). Therefore, items that reduce what customers owe – such as receipts, sales returns, discounts allowed and bad debts written off – must be credited in the control account.
| Sales Ledger Control Account | Debit £ | Credit £ |
|---|---|---|
| Balance b/d | 5,000 | |
| Credit sales | 12,000 | |
| Receipts from customers | 9,800 | |
| Sales returns | 450 | |
| Discount allowed | 250 | |
| Bad debts written off | 300 | |
| Balance c/d | 6,200 |
If a student debits sales returns, the control account will show a higher receivable balance than the actual list of customer balances. Always check the nature of the transaction: does it increase or decrease the amount owed to the business?
